Thanks for the reply mate.
Questions I have;
1. Dealer is recommending automatic over manual, I kind of understand this as my current 3 series has the auto and its a great gear box but I really want to return to a manual car..... though if it really does change the driving experience I am willing to consider the auto.
2. Must have options?
3. Realistic motorway MPG? I'm always a bit cautious of manufacturer numbers
4. What is wind noise / road noise like in the car on the motorway? I had bit of a problem with my 3 series which was rectified eventually by the dealer.
5. Your general happiness with the car
? Things you love, things you would change...
1. Of course he's recommending it. It's £1600 more expensive
The type of transmission is a very personal choice. The manual Mx35i benefits from having the same clutch and gearbox as the 1M. The other models in the F2x range get a really crap single-plate clutch setup which is truly awful. I got rid of my F21 125i purely because I hated the clutch so much. I strongly recommend that you test drive both because it could be an expensive mistake (I speak from personal experience). The ZF 8HP gearbox is awesome though. It's better than your current 3 series' box in every possible way if you're driving an E9x model.
2. Adaptive Suspension. The M235i has a stiffer suspension setup than the M135i, so this should be the first box you tick. You'll be driving around in Comfort mode most of the time (I presume), and the adaptive dampers really make the ride smooth.
Business Nav is very good these days because they've improved the screen and hardware and dropped the price. Having said that, Pro Nav really makes the car. If you do get the Business Nav (or no Nav at all), make sure that you spec the Black Panel Display. It transforms the dashboard.
I would spec the visibility package for the M235i because you get the fancy adaptive lights like the F30 3 series does. The M135i doesn't get this
The standard soundsystem is very poor, so at least upgrade to the advanced loudspeaker package.
3. I can easily achieve 38MPG in my M135i doing a steady 70mph. In this regard it's no worse than my old 125i which I think is very impressive. My long term average is 26.5MPG because most of my trips are under 5 miles, and I carry two mountain bikes on the roof often.
4. The sound-proofing is excellent, but the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres are very noisy on anything less than mirror-smooth tar. Quite a few owners who have the M Performance exhaust complain that the sound-proofing is almost
too good because they have to open the windows to hear it
5. I love my M135i. I think if I had to order it again, I would abandon the sunroof because with the roof bars fitted, it's now too noisy to open it. I would probably have spec'd electric seats and the reversing camera in its place but I don't miss not having them. My biggest gripe is that you can't fit a towbar to these cars. That for me would solve all of my problems
I'm test driving a car on Friday that has the M Performance exhaust fitted because the standard one is a bit too quiet. I have no doubt that I'll be ordering one soon afterwards
Since you're in High Wycombe, give the sales manager (Tony Lewis) at Berry Heathrow a call because he does very, very good deals on these cars. If you want to have a look at a M135i that has all of the gadgets that I've mentioned, let me know. I'd be happy to take a quick drive up the M40
EDIT: Your trust says High Wycombe, but your profile says Reading. I'm not sure which is true
