Since you're in High Wycombe, give the sales manager (Tony Lewis) at Berry Heathrow a call because he does very, very good deals on these cars. If you want to have a look at a M135i that has all of the gadgets that I've mentioned, let me know. I'd be happy to take a quick drive up the M40
EDIT: Your trust says High Wycombe, but your profile says Reading. I'm not sure which is true
Ok so having one
auto every single day of the week, the box is the 8 speed ZF and its seamless in day to day use but in sport or manual its brutally efficient, the acceleration is monstrous as I demonstrated to my boss off the M6 toll booths the other day
Driver Comfort pack, Adaptive Suspension, reversing camera, Pro Nav, HK Speakers and heated front seats would be my bare minimum for what I'd want. Mine has also the visibility pack (brilliant), through load system, sun protection pack, electric memory seats, folding mirror pack, and the brushed aluminium/black accent strips.
Sitting at 70-75 I can average over 40 mpg, the car is averaging around 30 over all types of driving. I run it on Super Unleaded only.
There is a bit of road noise but that is more down to the tyres than anything else, generally its a quiet and comfy place to be, with the stereo on you hear no road or wind noise.
Things I'd change...well to not have a Friday afternoon car and a dealer who's general level of competence has been somewhat questionable...

But if you want a new car what's the alternative?

Its only an issue if you dont plan things, if your doing to do 10-12 weeks without a car then its obviously daft waiting, if you plan it then whats the problem?

For special and custom orders fair enough - you want something unique then you must be prepared to wait for it. But for the regular models with custom orders it's only because we've just shrugged and accepted it that they don't hold sufficient stock to deliver them in a timely fashion. In other markets, most common combos are available from stock.
Depends, if your leasing for example you know when your lease will end, you can plan when to order the replacement.
I know there's a fair few E46 owners on the forums, just a quick bit of info, I've just got off the phone to BMW UK regarding the latest batch of airbag recalls, apparently they had no address on their system for my car, but it is affected and so is my mates 2003 M3. Might be worth giving them a call with your reg and last 7 from the VIN for them to check.
I'm booked in with Sytner Birmingham on the 4th October for a replacement airbag to be fitted.
I'd guess there's a lot of owners about who haven't received any letters so it may be worth giving them a call. The recall seems to affect 2003 and 2003 models.
