BMW and M Power Owners

I am finding this a lot with the petrol ones, the majority are very odd spec. I suspect most were private purchases from wealthy older people judging by the options choices and colour choices.

Thanks both - PDF is above and beyond!

Anything I should check when getting there other than the normal tyres/ press buttons and bodywork?

Is there a way to check disc wear on the idrive without pushing a finger through the spokes and feeling?

Reminds me of a 535i F11 I found with a cracking spec including HUD, soft close doors and rear seat entertainment yet for some bizarre reason only spec'd with business nav, it sat about for months before being sold. I seriously considered buying it and retro fitting NBT Pro Nav but I suspect this would have caused issues with the extended warranty.

It's big bill time... :(

So far I've had 15,000 hugely pleasurable and fault free miles from my 325i SE. But it's recently developed a fault - juddering on a cold start and lumpy running. And now a misfire. It's at a local BMW indy specialist who say the engine's logged running on only 2 cylinders, and having done some fault finding it's something in the VANOS that's up. Need to strip it down to pinpoint the problem.

Estimated bill anywhere from £800 to £2000 (or more)... If it's much/considerably more than that, then I'll have to put the repair bill on a card, then sell the car to pay it off and buy something cheaper :(

And no, being a low miles N52 engined 325i, with more than 60k on the clock, I didn't think it worth paying out for a warranty. Win some/lose some. Bum.

How confident are you in the ability of this 'specialist'?

Reminds me of the time a local 'specialist' diagnosed my 530i with head gasket failure and booked me in to strip the head off. Turns out all that was 'wrong' was a radiator leak and typical M54 short journey mayo.

Dammit mrk, because of you I ended up spending £40 on indicator bulbs, why do you do this to me? :p

Off the back of two colleagues at work, and they're on the recommended list of BMW specialists in the sticky on the BMW page on PH.

So far I've been impressed with communication and service - I had one preliminary visit before it's gone in now, during which they swapped two solenoids over to see if the problem moved from the inlet to exhaust in order to properly fault find based on the codes they had, which they charged me no labour for.

Pretty sure it's impossible for a VANOS fault to cause misfiring. Cam angle sensors could cause misfiring and vanos issues though.

Chap said that the misfire (which appeared for the very first time in between swapping the solenoids over and the fault reoccuring) could be:

a) a completely coincidental brand new problem, however unlikely that might be.
b) a new problem brought about by the juddering problem
c) the original problem manifesting itself in a second way - perhaps cam sensors as you mention.

My fingers are crossed it can be fixed for the £2k estimated - other than this, it's been a really solid car. By far the "best" car I've owned. I'd be gutted to have to get rid of it afterwards to pay for the repairs.

Wait a minite, I don't hear £2k worth of work here - do you know exactly what you're getting here!? How can they possibly have given you a price when they have no idea what the issue is??

Cam sensors are about £120 and a 5 minute fit. Diagnostics for £60

Coil packs are £40 each or thereabouts. Hours labour for the lot

Plugs are what, £60? Again an hour.

All the likely suspects do not sound anywhere near an £800 bill let alone £2k to me
