BMW and M Power Owners

question about having warranty work done.

If i drop my car off do they supply a hire car for you or can you hire a car?

Do they supply a like replacement?

Dealers have loan cars available but policies regarding whether they are free can vary but usually they are.

It's not like for like but the fleet is mixed so you might end up with another 3 Series but could equally end up with a 1 series, or a Mini, or a 5 Series etc.

Has anyone suffered from the e39 'shimmy'? I have it at around 55-70mph which is pretty damn annoying and looking online it seems to be quite prevalent.
I have seen suggestions of it being caused by numerous things from worn bushes, tyres, shocks, bent wheel and so on.

So I was wondering if anyone had and resolved the issue and if so, how?

Thanks.

I had it at various times, it was fixed thruogh a combination of:

a) GOOD wheel balance on a Hunter Road Force balancing machine
b) Replacement upper and lower control arms

Well, my MFD on my 5 series did display some "artefacts" occasionally, so I took it into BMW to get it looked at. I wanted the satnav updated too (not the actual maps, but the software) as there were some inclusions that sounded good, and my NBT had a LOT less features on it than the CIC I had in my 3 series.

So, it went in, and they did some updates. Kinda liking the new set-up on the NBT unit. I usually drive with the split screen showing the trip computer, and that used to just list all the relevant info. But it has now changed. You still get the impotant bits, but it is no longer listed, and instead, the mile count and start time (IIRC) slowly move up the screen as the miles increase, until you get to around the 600 mile mark, where it sits at the top. All the while, with a massive blank section of screen. Weird. Not sure if I like it.

On the flip side though, the update has brought back my "internet" capability I had in the 3 series. Not full internet, but it does allow me to read the news, check the weather, and some other stuff. The Nav part of the computer does now allow me to wiki destinations and stuff, which I couldn't do before. And basically, overall, gives me a lot more options.

My Pro Nav in my F11 is now closer to the functionality I had with my Pro Nav in my E91. So overall I'm much happier. Although it will take me a little while to get used to the new screen layout on the split screen.

On the other plus side, the reset had the guy asking about my phone and stuff, and my connected drive Eco Pro analyser hadn't been working for a while. I put this down to a couple ROM flashes I had done not being compatible.

However, my latest flash is now working, so that's good. And as a result, I have been able to log my journeys again. Now, I was on holiday, so had a car full to the brim with kids and camping stuff, but despite this, I still managed a record score of over 50 mpg on a near 60 mile run. Moreover, my general consumption has increased drastically now we are no longer on winter diesel. Nice. Bear in mind though, these results are often on Scottish back roads, some A roads admittedly, but mostly B roads and windy, hilly A roads. So not too bad.

Surely it would decrease, not increase.

Impressive numbers. No idea what your road types and driving style is like. I did a 60 mile round trip to Salcombe at the weekend and returned a staggering 34mpg. I continue to be largely underwhelmed at the fuel economy really. Ok it was all twisty small A roads and the like but even so...

Can any car be taken in for updates like this? ive got an 07 e92 and desperately want music over blutooth

Yes - they will happily update the firmware to the latest integration level for you, but it won't be free.

This requires a hardware change and a completely different version of iDrive to the one you have fitted. I'd just buy an aftermarket adaptor.

Yep, that's what I meant, sorry.

Yeah, numbers are good. Mostly on twisty A/B roads I guess, these numbers have been achieved by sitting 50-65 depending on just how twisty the road gets. As an example of the roads taken, here is the culprit for the 50.2 mpg (not my real destination, but close enough).

Mostly A road

To be fair though, despite that being pretty much all A road, it certainly isn't A road like the A90 or A92 around here (also roads I frequent).

Most roads I drive are around are in the general area of the destination though. If I'm on dual carriageways though, generally looking at 70-75 mph.

As for actual driving style, I'm generally the fastest thing I come across on the road, but not always. However, I will wait for a very suitable stretch to actually overtake something (if my kids are in the car), unless I am completely frustrated with the driver, then I will overtake when it is suitably safe, rather than relaxingly safe. Not much of these number have much town miles either though.

Yeah, they wont update for nothing. But I did have some "issues" and they updated because of that. I didn't pay because it was still under warranty.

It's amazing how much difference the roof colour makes to the E46. I've seen the same colour E46 convertible before but one with a black roof and it looked quite nice, this above one with blue roof looks nice too but I think my combo, carbon black with black roof looks more fresh.

This guy had the best gearbox too  Although grey interior and WOOD... :(

So had my car serviced and they mentioned the tyre tread. So, I have a 1 series with run flats on all. I don't really like the ride, and the grip is a lot to be desired for. As only my front two need changing, is it a OK idea to change them to normal tyres, then wait for the back tyres tread to go abit more before forking out for another 2?

It's generally not the done thing. How much tread is on the rears? If there is plenty, then you can sell them on and recoup much of the cost of non RFT tyres?

My dad is considering chucking both his car and van in for a 5 series Msport.

We've seen a 2006 model which has done 61000 miles here for £6k http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif.../se100pl/radius/1501/model/5_series?logcode=p

His insurance on it is only £350 as well.

Would you say a 9 year old BMW is a bad investment? If properly maintained, how long can you expect to get out of the engine, or is that a how long is a bit of string question?

He's 67 and smokes like a trooper, so it could well end up being his last car if lasts long enough.

6k chavved up E60 that doesn't even have climate control/xenons etc and is in white. What makes you think it might be a reasonable investment, especially for a 67 year old?

Very ageist. Just because my dads in his 60's, does that mean he should stick to Mondeo's and Focus'?

I see you've misread and/or misunderstood what I've said.

That car you've linked to is a poor choice, can you not see this just by looking at it? IMO, your dad could get a very elegant 5 series that would command some respect etc. An SE would be very comfortable too. Or is the "we" you refer to so that you can mostly drive it too so it has to look hip? :p

OK. Dont know what the problem with Asian drivers are exactly lol, but what about the model in general at that age and mileage?

Nothing wrong with the drivers. Although owners of a white bmw with black alloys and fake xenons...asking for trouble. Been there, done that. Try find him a well specc'd SE.

No. I dont want to drive it. I Like my Astra.

Do you mean something like this? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...o_50000_miles/page/1/model/5_series?logcode=p
