BMW and M Power Owners

Just a quick one guys.

Ordering some new rear tyres for my 325ti Sport.

I've chosen to go with Eagle F1 AS2's as they seem to be really good value at the minute - £84 in 245/40/17.

Just wondering if I should go for the regular or the XL versions for my car?

Hope they last longer than the Kumho KU39 that the previous owner fitted just before I bought the car - 4 months & 5k miles! And they are now barely legal!

If your fronts are normal loading tyres then I'd just go with the non xl's - if the fronts are extra load then I'd match them

The above is for absolutely no technical reason that I can actually give you

I've found it can be really difficult to get eagle f1's or sport contacts that aren't xl for some reason.

Seem to have a knock on my e46 when turning left/right and braking (only at a stop). Seems to be more apparent on the front near side wheel but I can't see anything out of place. Also when lifting off the brake in neutral there is a small knock sound coming from the gearbox which can be felt on the gearstick as well. Car is an auto.

Well I did some more investigating. Seems like the knock is coming only when releasing the brake and not when turning. Definitely seems like it's coming from the left front - and only occurs at slow speed (1mph). It will also knock if I reverse or move forward again at slow speed and only when I release the brake pedal.

I'm thinking sticky caliper. May change my pads to see if it's not the pad itself. Any ideas?

I get a very very minor knock under similar circumstances - I can just about feel it but it's definitely there. No idea what's knocking though - sorry I couldn't have been more helpful :p

On the M3? If so then it’s normal if it’s the noise I’m thinking of. It’s part of the torque/load transfer under slow acceleration/deceleration. It will be less obvious under certain conditions and more obvious on other. Vita’s on the other hand is something else!

It is probably that the pad is slightly smaller than an OEM pad and it shifts in caliper creating a knock or clunk sound. It happens in my e39, especially if you go from forward to reverse or vice versa.

Probably early signs of the droplink.

It never did it before you see. So I'm unsure whether it is actually the pad.

Maybe - it didn't do it yesterday mind you. If it does worsen I'll get it checked out. That also reminds me I think my exhaust is blowing lol.

Hate you! But big kudos for not choosing the odd looking M4.

What colour did you go for? Yas Marina gives me a semi.

This is a perfect example of why the new naming scheme is so odd, the M3 and M4 appear to be the exact same car with a difference of one having rear doors... Is there anything different internally?

Intermittent noises like that usually to point towards suspension as it's relates to the weather.

You can't check it out though, needs blindly replacing. It's more likely the drop link than a pad knocking.

If it is the drop link why does it not occur over bumps? Had drop links go before and they'd clang like metal over bumps. This doesn't.
