BMW and M Power Owners

Looking to get a new set of wheels in the next few months. I spent a month in a brand new Ford Mustang crossing the United States last month and fell in love with it. I'm looking to get something with a similar feel but for significantly less money, so after much back and forth I've started to really strongly favour a used Z4.

Does anyone have any advice for picking up a used Z4 E85 model circa 03, 04, 05?

Any particular things to watch out for, mileage hurdles that tend to hurt etc.

Cheers

EDIT: Has anyone else noticed that if you search this forum for "Z4" it returns no results, weird!

The roof motor tends to be one of the most known problems, try to find one that has had it replaced already. Otherwise they are pretty bombproof. Lots of z4s turning up on the forum this summer :D

I think the search function doesn't work for words shorter than three characters, which can be quite annoying.

You can use the google site search function as a work around. Type "z4 site:forums.overclockers.co.uk" into Google and it will show all the thread titles/posts with 'z4' in.

Could be the proud owner of a second hand BMW 330d Touring M Sport pack, 2007. Really smart car. Cream dakota leather as well, looks damn nice.

Should know by the end of today, annoyingly it's 2.5 hour drive from me. If anyone is down the Somerset way and doesn't mind viewing, that would be EPIC. As I won't buy until I've viewed/test driven. Which won't be until Saturday.

How can you possibly know before the end of the day whether you're buying a car that you've never seen nor driven?

Also, didn't you just get rid of a 130i, this seems to make little to no sense?

Where in Somerset? If it is close I might be able to help you out

Sigh, typical motors poster.

Actually read my post. COULD. Need to confirm a few things first, go see it. I had to find out if it was still available after the weekend (small firm). Don't know why I'm explaining this to you.

As for 130i M, that went over a year ago? What does my personal car history have anything to do with it?

Obvious troll is obvious. Move along please.

It's in Yeovil chap, if you're able to, I'll stop by on the way to my test drive on Sat to supply beer tokens if it's not too much of a detour.

Either way, chances are I'm going down on Saturday morning first thing. And as they are a small dealership (husband and wife run), I think they won't mind me viewing one night this eve after work. I'll have to ask tomorrow.

Conflicting statements, simple question from me. Was also interested in the 1 series journey to this, seems less than a year ago but whatever. (edit - didn't realise there was also an e46 touring in the mix, it just seems.....odd)

If you can't deal with simple questions then I dunno, don't answer?

...

Just as I don't see any real reason, I had the 1er, sold on due to wanting a touring bike for a Europe trip and replaced the 1er with a temporary car, which was then replaced with an old E46 touring 3ltr petrol which is now being ugraded to the one I'm hoping to snatch up this week if all fits in place.

I chop and change both motorbikes and cars a lot. No ill fete nor reasons, just fidget with my vehicles. But loved the 330i, however as I do a lot of motorway miles, the d is more appealing for economy. And a newer model would be nicer as well.

Seem to have a knock on my e46 when turning left/right and braking (only at a stop). Seems to be more apparent on the front near side wheel but I can't see anything out of place. Also when lifting off the brake in neutral there is a small knock sound coming from the gearbox which can be felt on the gearstick as well. Car is an auto.

It's a bit out of the way for me sadly, I'm the wrong side of Taunton so it is a good 40 min drive and I'm only free Wednesday night

If it was close it wouldn't have been a problem but the wife will complain even more than usual as I'd be out every evening this week

Hope the car is a good one if you're making that length of journey

The economy point is a bit of a moot one, a good 2007 330d must be approaching £10k, they have their own issues and tbh the 6 cylinder diesel isn't massively more economical than the petrol 6 (about 45mpg vs low to mid 30's on a decent run at that age)

So does your car have sat nav at all?

No... I was hoping maybe there were 2 different versions of Sat Nav (the expensive near £2,000 option for the bigger screen and touchpad) and I could just upgrade the software that has a Sat Nav a more basic version but that's not the case...

Absolutely this. The older they get the fewer the reasons to buy a 330d. Especially an E90 from a period of time when there is still a decent selection of petrol alternatives.

Thought it's interesting how 'Should be the proud owner of' actually turns to mean 'I have seen a car on autotrader'. This is generally how people end up buying nails - they mentally buy a car before they've even called up and got more info let alone actually viewed it, which means they tend to overlook issues and convince themselves they want it.

Given the ratio of sheds:nice cars when buying 8 year old BMW's surely odds are on it not being worth buying anyway.
