BMW and M Power Owners

i need a new battery for my 07 330i, BMW want £198!

Can anyone recommend one? If i swap it myself will there be any issues with anything?

Afraid I cant help too much other than to say I caved and paid BMW to fit an AGM battery in mine. With the potential need for registering different capacities and types of battery and BMW no longer selling the Calcium batteries it was the least hassle option.

Hi all,

My E92 is currently in with BMW for some work under the extended comprehensive warranty. Whilst in they have kindly completed a complimentary health check and have identified that the rear upper control arms require replacement.

Could anyone tell me if this is a common issue on the E92? I consider it a little unusual for a car that is 5 years old and only has 50k on the clock to require suspension components at a cost in the region of £800 if I'm honest.

If I'm being unrealistic expecting more please do tell me so.

I am somewhat surprised this isn't being done under warranty. What policy do you have?

It isn't listed as an excluded component on the Comprehensive policy and your car is not high mileage...

I have the comprehensive warranty with £100 excess which was taken out in November. Ill review my policy document in that case and challenge the dealer if you're confident it should be covered?

Appreciate your advice on this one Fox, thanks a lot :)

Well the comprehensive policy is a case of 'it's covered unless its listed' and I cannot see it listed in mine. There is a 'wear and tear' clause but frankly I would be surprised if that was genuinely invoked at 50k miles.

Sometimes dealers assume something isn't covered and don't submit it to BMW Warranty for approval...

Thanks for the advice Fox. I am onto the dealer now to push them on it a little. Will report back once I get a response.

FWIW my rear control arm bushes went to 200k on my E39. I'd be unhappy at failure as little as 50k miles and frankly this just adds to the case that I would expect it to be covered by the warranty as a premature failure rather than a wear and tear item.

I just fitted a HSB096 (iirc) from Halfords to the 335i as they had a 10% off deal, seemed like a decent price with a 5 year warranty. I registered the battery myself using DCAN cable & tool32 - was very easy.

Out of interest how much have you spent on it since you got the keys?

I know this question wasn't directed at me, but I've spent a lot of money on my E46 M3 (~£1000) and not done more than a few hundred miles in it, however I did plan for this and I did get it below "market" value (based on my constant trawling of the classifieds :)) knowing that it needed work done. These cars need a lot of maintenance as they get older.

Sorry late reply is late, posted fox poo, got suspended :o

Circa £2700 I'd say. £180 of that has been an actual fault under the bonnet (Replacing DSC pressure sensors 1 and 2). Everything else was personal preference, just to make it more "mine". I don't regret it one bit though. Still get a nice grin when climbing 4-5-6-7-8000rpm.

I suspect my hedgehog is failing though, as there are some quirks with the heater vents like I had in the last E46, but I want to rule out an AC system fault first so have booked it into the indy next week before busting my hands up replacing the spiky bugger.

Watch out for them kerbs then :P

Too late for that I'm afraid - this was in July and on said 17" - hit a tree root at the edge of a lane as was further over than normal due to a lorry coming the other way (in fairness he shouldn't have been there due to a bridge having a weight and width restriction) leaving two blown tyres and two bent rim lips:

Still, Lepsons were very good for the wheel refurb, and as both tyres had to be replaced their tyre place managed to source the slightly odd size Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2 255/40/R17 (to match the set on the other two wheels which were brand new in February along with the wheels, annoyingly) for less than anyone who actually had them in stock on t'Internet.

Very good finish from Lepsons I have to say, and turned round in double quick time - dropped off on the Saturday and picked them up fully painted and lacquered with the new tyres on and balanced on the Friday, so would definitely recommend, even though I hope I won't have to use them again!

I'm not that impressed with Lepsons actually. The finish when they give you the wheel is amazing, but it seems nowhere near as durable as the factory finish - it picks up loads of tiny marks and scratches, presumably from little stones/grit on the road.

What on earth have you spent £2500 on for personalisation :eek:

I should have noted that this also included £300 in alloy refurbs (damn kerbs, fool me thrice...) and also pre-emptive purchase of OEM brake discs for a £200 saving.

Quick update, my local dealer assure me that the claim was submitted to BMW and the insurance company but declined as the part isnt a mechanical failure but adamant it is wear and tear.

I have since contacted BMW UK who have pushed the dealer to submit a request for the work to be completed as a goodwill gesture which all being well I should have a response on tomorrow. In the meantime the local dealer has managed to reduce the price of the work by £200 to £560 as the car is over 4 years old...

You can replace the battery yourself, ideally the new one should be registered to the car though so the car knows a new has been fitted and will adjust the charging parameters to match.
Also if you change battery capacity or switch from lead acid to AGM you need register these changes too.

hmm i don't fancy messing around with things like that, is this something a standard garage can do?

I would have done it if it was just a swap job, but my uncle owns a garage so if its something they can do i can take it there.

Do you know what colour and capacity your current battery is? I believe if its a BMW supplied battery white is a lead acid and black is an AGM.

So, for example if you have a white 90AH battery fitted now and you buy a 90AH lead acid battery you would probably get away without registering it but the battery life may be reduced as it might be over charged, but many people have done this I am sure.

You can buy a cable for very little money though and the software is readily available to accomplish the registration procedure. You can also use it to diagnose the car yourself.

I am not sure if a garage with say a generic Snap-on diagnostic tool can do it, but I would not be surprised if they can.

The wait for my car is killing me, hoping to get the build order number out of my dealer so I can badger BMW CS every day rather than him (feel sorry for the guy though I haven't contacted him for a whole week) :p
