BMW and M Power Owners

Nice. Sounds like you've got it all sorted now.

Cheers, still waiting for the brackets and hoses to fit them, but hoping to have it done ASAP as there's a BMW thing going on at Munich Legends on the 2nd September that I want to attend. It would be nice to have everything done by then :)

Sigh, some moron managed to slightly scrape the back of my <2 month old m235 today. I was pulled up at a roundabout and he didn't stop in time.

To make things worse I didn't feel/hear anything so it didn't click right away why he was looking at me funny as we both drove off and thus he's probably gotten away with it. I remember a partial plate and make (gold Toyota of some kind, I think Yaris) but that's it. Knocked up a quick application that uses the auto trader vehicle check thing to try out the different reg combos but not hopeful...even if there is a match it's probably not worth going through insurance anyway and I'd have no way to contact him.

How much to fix a 3cm long/1mm high scrape on a rear bumper do you reckon?

If a smart repair wouldn't expect more than £100.

You'll need a whole respray mate.

In all seriousness, I would go to BMW and ask them to quote for a smart repair.

BMW will just farm the "smart repair" out to a third party. Sounds like a simple enough fix and is worth doing properly on a car of that age, although Id expect to pay somewhere in the region of £400-600 to get it sorted properly through a BMW bodyshop.

They might do, but at least it will be covered under a BMW warranty.

Well the comprehensive policy is a case of 'it's covered unless its listed' and I cannot see it listed in mine. There is a 'wear and tear' clause but frankly I would be surprised if that was genuinely invoked at 50k miles.

Sometimes dealers assume something isn't covered and don't submit it to BMW Warranty for approval...

Final update on this:

Pretty good result overall I would say. In the end I contacted BMW UK customer service who contacted the dealer on my behalf to suggest that they submit a gesture of goodwill claim for the replacement upper suspension arms.

The local dealer contacted me today to confirm that BMW had agreed to cover the full cost of the replacement parts and 80% of the labour charge which meant I have only ended up paying £90 as opposed to the origional £760 quoted.

In addition, I required two rear tyres. The initial price quoted for these was £540 for Eagle F1 Ass 2's, this has now been reduced to a little over £320 after I produced a quote from another supplier for just over £300. For the sake of £20 i'd rather BMW fit them whilst the car is in with them rather than go and wait around at a back street garage for the tyres to be fitted.

Overall I'm quite happy with the result and just goes to show what can be achieved if you complain politely but firmly. (It might also help that we have three BMW's in our household two of which are coming upto 3 years old)

Yeah I'll definitely be getting a quote from BMW directly. Hopefully they'll be able to make it completely unnoticeable :/

So unbelievably angry about this, never had an accident and then as soon as I splash out on a new car this happens.

Good result, but if you had pushed back requesting they cover 100% of the labour, they almost definitely would've done it. This has happened to me several times and while the 100%/80% offer was enough to get the work started, when I've gone back to BMW each time they have agreed to cover 100% of the labour. They are more or less admitting fault but masking it under "goodwill".

I know what you're saying and did consider pushing for full coverage of labour but opted to roll over and take it it at this point. Granted the component shouldn't have failed at the age/mileage but on the plus point when I get the car back it should feel a lot tighter as a result of the work completed, as well as having the benefit of a full four wheel laser alignment to restore the car to within factory tolerances.

Excellent result, it would have been nonsense to expect you to pay for that on a 50k mile car covered by warranty.

Yeah its been in and been inspected. At first I thought it was just those bushes, but it looks like one of the arb bushes has been bodged with some tape.

Just had another quote elsewhere for £679 but hes quoted me for dampers x2, top struts x2, arb links x2, arb rubbers x2. No quote for the actual ARB just the links?

Times like this I wish my car knowledge was a little sharper!

The ARB links connect the roll bar to the suspension arms (on the front of a Z4 they're connected to the front upright that the struts clamp into). There would not normally be any reason to replace the actual anti roll bar - it's a bent metal tube/rod. The drop links have ball joints in rubber, so are another common wear part on the car. They're cheap and easy to replace, as are the anti roll bar bushings, so frankly I'd start with those and see.

Could you ask why they've suggested the struts/springs as I'm still confused on this point? How many miles has the car done?

Had an e46 320i Sport saloon for a bit. Got the van spec instead as I now have more stuff to haul about.

'04 330i touring. 77k miles with a sunroof :-)

Yeah I'll be going to see then this morning. At first inspection they just showed me where something had been bodged onto the ARB using tape instead of a new bushing or something. Will be asking why this suddenly means I have to replace everything else?

It's on 90k.
