I had one perfect experience buying BMW AUC at distance with my 3 series and a terrible one with my X3. Fortunately someone could see the 3 for me and it had been very well looked after and detailed before sale, but the X3 I had to take on the basis of pictures, videos and descriptions from the dealer. It had various scratches and was not valeted well at all even though only 3 years old, less than 15k miles and described as immaculate - I specifically told them I wanted it to be in perfect condition and I had time to wait for a perfect one if it wasn't. Anyway, took delivery in Jersey (it came from a Sytner AUC in Wales) and I had a nit list of literally 12 things that were not as described, most of which could easily have been fixed had a proper detail been done on the car before delivery, two other dings required further work. I took delivery in May and when I visited UK in August they agreed to pick it up from me and fix everything.
Just not an ideal experience, so my advice would be never trust what the dealer says, so you're doing the right thing by going to see it. Even if you get there and it needs a few things doing to it, I wouldn't take the dealer's word that they have been done, so would go back and see it again or hang around for a day while they fix it. Also, if the AUC dealer is within a network (e.g. Sytner) they will generally deliver between branches so that you can view it somewhere more convenient to you, if you put a deposit down.
