Boeing 777 shot down

I've met people with PhD's who are just as dumb, not quite sure what his point was.

I've always found that it matters not what people do know - whether that be from a GCSE up to a PhD. What really matters is if people know what they don't know. Which is most likely the case here - people using something they were never trained or qualified to do without the appropriate safeguards along with a laissez-faire attitude from the airlines about overflying areas of conflict with a shrug of the shoulders and a well nothing normally happens attitude.

Well basically fox, the people in control of that area of Ukraine (known as the Donetsk People's Republic) made it clear some time ago that their airspace was a no fly zone (works out well for them as they only have like 2 planes) and any intruders would be shot down, hence why they have been shooting down military aircraft there and now apparently this.

Oh right, I didn't realise a No Fly Zone could be formally established by random separatists.

Igor Girkin on the VKontakte social network: "We just downed an An-26 near Torez. It's down somewhere near Progress mine, We had warned them not to fly in 'our sky'"

Igor has just let the cat out the bag about who blow up the passenger jet.

Look at it this way, we don't recognise the legitimacy of Russia's control of Crimea, but if they announce it's a no fly zone, then it's a no fly zone. Legitimacy is pretty irrelevant in this situation, the people in full control of the region declared it a no fly zone well ahead of time and they were fully equipped to enforce it.

I wouldn't want to fly there, you?

There is a translation of the video on one of the main Reddit threads.

Absolutely no way of any of us are proving if it's real or not though.

Youtube video code V5E8kDo2n6g in Russian (as you would expect)

Any reputable translation?

From reddit, but can you can make out words like 'Thompson' so this translation may be accurate:

SBU (Ukrainian defence agency) published a captured terrorists' radio-chat

A brief translation:
terrorist Bes: Just shot down a plane. Miner's group did it. Crashed near Enakievo.
...
'Major': So, it were 'chernukhin' guys who shot down the plane. Near the Chernukhino block-post. The cossacks that stay near Chernukhino. The plane fell apart in the sky near the Petropavlovsk mine. Found the first '200' (a corpse). A civilian.
'Grek': What do you have?
'Major': Damn this was a civil flight.
...
'Grek': did they have weapons?
'Major': nothing at all. Just civil luggage, medicine, towels and toilet paper.
'Grek': what about documents?
'Major': Yes, indonesian student's card. From the Thompson University.
