Boeing 777 shot down

None of this changes what I've stated. Yes, NATO is far more powerful than Russia but let me ask you this: what happens when you're a neighbour with Russia and you're not part of NATO? Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova is what happens.

As history has shown, authoritarian regimes are capable of anything and they tend to eat naive, peace-loving democracies for breakfast, unless they have powerful friends. NATO needs to stay strong, the world is not a safe place, the freedoms the people in the West Civilisation have gained after centuries of conflict can be lost in the blink of an eye.

The problem is what happens when you have a massive military alliance at your doorstep, while your own military is less powerful especially with regards to technology and the one trump card,ie,MAD,is also being negated due to a missile shield? For all the mahoosive flaws Russia has, this is what they see,so do you really think after how Cuba was treated after it stuck one up at the US,that we would not do the same?? Its not to say Russia has a right to do stuff like what they did recently, but then it should not mean our own actions should be considered fine either, including all the wars and instability we have instigated too.

What also happens when we want to use our massive power projection capabilities to destroy some country on whatever pretext we want??

I remember how big the demonstrations about the war in Iraq were, but did that even lead to some sort of public consultation?? No it did not and the war was fought for dodgy reasons, leading to thousands of Europeans and Americans dying, loads more Iraqis and hundreds of billions dollars, maybe more which is money which has meant we are more indebted, which Joe and Jane public have to bare the burden of. Plus we helped Saddam before that anyway.

All the warmongers never sent their children to die,and ended up doing very nicely out of it.

You should try living in a country where there was a horrible conflict(I have),and maybe you might feel somewhat differently about amping up the rhetoric due to the politics of fear.

All it serves is the politicians, xenophobes and nationalists on both sides of ANY conflict who will send other people's children to die and profit off all the misery while living in luxury.

So,after Cold War MK1 we thought defence spending would go down.

It did not.

We had Saddam and Libya and so on.

When that ended,we thought defence spending would go down.

It did not.

We had Iraq MK2,Afghanistan and Islamists.

When that ended,we thought defence spending would go down.

It did not.

We have Cold War MK2.

That blows over.

Will defence spending go down?

No it won't.

YELLOW CHINA alert - they will take over the world.

And so on...!

People bitch and moan at the Russians about wars.

Yet coming from us over the last 400 years, where we ***** most of the world over so we could have a better standard of living is just hilarious. Different methods, same result.

Why do you think we have so much of the world's resources or live this great resource intensive lifestyle??

Its because we are doing it on the bodies of most of the world's population. Most of the world has barely enough food and energy as it is,since we take as much of it as possible.

We honestly don't really care about most of the world, since we are selfish, and its all pretend crocodile tears. We maintain large militaries so we can make sure the rest of the world is subjucated to our needs, not for their freedom - for our freedom to do what we want.

We want our standard of living and there is a price to pay for it. The only real reason we hate the Russians and the Chinese is since they don't tow our line and have potential to oppose us,so we would rather they all shut up TBH. If they became our mates,we could care less with what they did. Infact we see that more and more with China as we criticise them less and less, since we want their investment.

If we truly wanted freedom for everyone we would use less resources so everyone else can have more food to eat and more oil to use.

Yeah, most of us are sooooo willing to do that. NOT.

Most of us complain when petrol at the pump goes up by 5P.

Three siblings from Perth were on the plane, Australian media report. Mo, Evie and Otis Maslin, aged 12, 10 and 8, were seen off by their parents in Amsterdam before boarding the flight with their grandfather Nick Norris, Melbourne's Herald Sun reports.

:(

We'll they can fly low...

But no I don't see why a local radar system being operated by some rebels is going to distinguish between a military transport plane and an airliner. That's the main thing - they're operating this thing in relative isolation, no command and control... no liaising with air traffic control etc...

Correct, the SA-11 GADFLY (or 9K37 Buk) usually operates as a system with several other vehicle components, such as a C&C vehicle and the Snow Drift RADAR that has a Friend or Foe indicator on. However, it can operate completely on its own with the use of that great big RADAR attached to it that looks a bit like a pencil eraser. I think it's called FIRE DOME or FIRE TRAP or something like that. Really effective piece of kit (clearly).

Lol because that was confirmed too?

No, I was just musing.

So far, watching the news programs there have been no confirmation of it being shot down. A lot of speculation. Heard on BBC radio2 it could have been a Chinese made missile. BBC web page saying Russian military claim a Ukrainian missile battery lit up just before the plane disaster.
Washington saying Russia shot it down and berating European countries for not putting more sanctions on Russia. Ukrainian guy saying it was a 'war on Europe, a war on the world'.

Really, so far apart from the vast amounts of propaganda/spin there has been no proof of anything. I also think it is disrespectful to the relatives of the people on board the plane when the American and Russian Govts. try to point score.

The yanks have pretty much said they are 100% convinced it was bought down by a Surface To Air Missile.

I think that was established yesterday, but they're unsure of its Origin.

"The shooting down of the Malaysian airliner may be a war crime under the Geneva Convention," Dr James Summers, Director of the Centre for International Law and Human Rights at Lancaster University, tells the BBC.
"Malaysia could be entitled to bring the state responsible for the shooting down of the airliner, or providing the missiles to do so, before the International Court of Justice," he said.

Well I like how certain countries already have proportioned the blame even before the crash site has even been studied by international or European teams. Red Russian commie *******s are to blame for it all.

Anyone can see where the outcome of this is going.

Yes,and our lot will be desperate to pin it on the Russians,so we can have Cold War MK2.

Anything for our politicians to deflect away from plunging us into a deep economic crisis and doing eff all to actually help Joe and Jane public.

The worst thing where was all this war crime stuff with the USS Vincennes and Iran Air 655 or when the Ukranians shot down a Russian airliner in 2001?

The international war crimes court is now a joke - it seems some countries are immune from it,and is fast becoming a tool of war.

However,fear works well.

1984 here we come.

I'd want to know this if I were flying tomorrow to be honest :o

Agreed but the tone of the tweet came across as they were having a sly dig at Malaysia Airlines, giving them a good kick while they are down. There was really no need for the "your safety is our top priority" line. The could have just said "For those of you wondering, Finnair does not fly over Ukraine" and left it at that.
