Bought an old BMW M3, filled with regret...

Looks alright on the outside but no inside pics to tell for sure :p

For that kind of price you could easily end up spending the same money on fixing it up mechanically so probably dodged a bullet in the long run.

Personally I'd only entertain a manual version purely for the reasons many have outlined already on SMG issues that will affect them all at some point, plus, a manual will hold a bit more value down the line.

Interior was fine:

I knew i didn't want it, but because of the M3 badge... I almost had it. Plus we could then be M3 friends mrk.

Wanted a E93 more than anything.

You could have had that for 2.5k and you said no? LOL!

Was it a none runner or something? If it was running seriously man, instant 1-2k profit in that just for selling it on......

There are two kinds of bonds in the world, a bond with tea, and am M3 m8 bond

But... Are those carpets I see from another car? That passenger side mat is too grey and too small! If someone is willing to fit incorrect mats, what else is incorrect on it I have to ask?!

Yup, an M3 for 2.5k. It was running when I almost bought it.When my mechanic went to fetch it to try fix the SMG problem he couldn't get the car to start. Said he could smell burning and most likely the starter motor failing.

Told him to leave it and crack on with his day. I then hummed and arred. Mate said "**** it" and rang a BMW breaker in sheff and the guy fetched it and dragged it onto his carrier within half a hour lol... Left 3k with his wife. (We was both in Leicester on a job at the time whilst all this was happening)

I'm not fussed. Was a great looking car, but a ticking time bomb.

ticking time bomb.

This is the main bit, did you want this? Because that's how you get this for 2.5k :p

Also, Eventuri sound from inside the cabin as heard through a decent microphone (thanks Bryan :p) this. The stock airbox had almost no induction note, the exhaust dominated the entire rev range north of 3000rpm. Now the induction noise is there throughout. Neat.

Jesus, even I would have bought that for 2.5K safe in the knowledge that I could get my money back even if it broke catastrophically!

e; just read that is was screwed. Never mind then, wouldn't have had it... :p

Christ I'd have snapped his hand off seriously you could have just left it on the drive and even had a go at sorting yourself over time!!

It'll probably be broke into pieces and there goes another E46 :(

This was my exact problem with my M3, being stripped of all sound proofing and a bear interior, exhaust noise was immense. :(

Hence I changed to stock exhaust system which improved things but I could still hardly hear induction noise.

Then I changed to CSL air box and my problems went away, induction roar dominated the car throughout the entire rev range both inside and outside, I love it! :)

The issue with SMG is when it goes like mine did it was a 1600 quid bill for the new unit but BMW have since found it acceptable to increase the SMG price to nearly 2400 for folks now so it makes it uneconomical.

This is why the majority of E46 M3's that are for sale (that are SMG's) aren't listed in the title as such, the manuals are so much more appealing and saleable.

That doesn't achieve anything other than wasting peoples time though. As soon as you look at the pictures, you will see its an SMG, and hit the back button... :p

Quite, it's annoying to be honest. Especially on Pistonheads, there should at least be an option for a "manual manual", not one of those silly "DSG*/DCT*/SMG manuals" :p

*Which I'd actually want... :)
