**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Just on my long weekend now.. week 8 starts on Monday. Back for 2 weeks, then off for xmas leave but have an exercise and adventure week in these two weeks.. cold will be an understatement.

Totally forgot you were there Samsung. Its been pretty alright though I've found. The signal is rubbish so I haven't even bothered with forums at all. Congrats on passing out.. I'm not jealous at all....

Probably won't read this thread again for another few weeks now heh.

Well, I got a call today from my AFCO, I have a formal presentation next Thursday, then my interview early January. Any tips for the presentation? Apart from the obvious dress smartly, shave etc?

Get it in writing in email to your command chain and CC it to their boss or your section CO explaining the legitimate reason why you can't take them all and usually they can push to carry more than 15 days over. Admin could in fact just regard some of your leave as PODL which is carried over regardless. The rest could be carried, up to 25 days I think (rather than the standard 15).

I'm sure you already know all this but hey, just in case you, or any one else didn't.

Boss sorted it out, off until April!!!

I do have 6 weeks of courses to break it up in the middle though.

Know RAF history inside out, know your future job role inside out, know yourself inside out.

On my written test I had a Royal Marine grill the hell out of me on RM general knowledge whilst we were waiting for results. I did ok but I still felt stupid for some of the ones I got wrong.

Good preparation for your interview as well.

Is that for the presentation as well? Or for the interview stage?

Certainly for the interview but not essential for the presentation.

No harm in at least knowing the basics though, in case you do get asked.

Oh, of course, I'll be doing as much preparation as possible before the interview - I was considering researching and presenting what's needed as an academic-style document (as well as memorize) - particularly when it comes to the aircraft used etc?

If your interview is anything like mine it will be an informal chat about you as a person, what your motives are, and what you know about the RAF, in particular the job role you are applying for.

You most likely won't get the chance to show off any paperwork, so make sure you know it all. Mine wasn't even interested in my academic paperwork let alone anything else.

Some things to know..

- Aircraft used and basic knowledge of them.. E.g the role of the Tornado GR4...
- RAF bases around the country
- RAF rank structure
- past VC winners, and other notorious RAF moments... Battle of Britain etc.
- Current affairs... where are the RAF currently serving in the world and why?
- In depth knowledge of the application process you are in.. what comes next, and what's after that...
- The RAF motto and what it means
- Who is the RAF top dog?
- Know your contract... what rights do you have for leaving mid-training? What is the minimum time you can serve in the RAF?
- Pay? During training and after passing out
- Where is RAF HQ?

I may be drunk

When people tell you to learn stuff about the forces (e.g. equipment) do not go into so much detail as speed of a 5.56mm round from an SA80, what the firing range of a Type 45 destroyer is or what the max thrust of a GR4 is, like some people I know did.

I wasn't asked anything like those questions???

I did a paper test. Came back a week later for the results. Got offered jobs based on those results. Then picked a trade.
No interviews, presentations (?) or any of that stuff.

I've got no idea on any of that now :p.

He'll have to be good to get an Engineering Officer placement :)

Fingers crossed then :) Although that has me wondering, if after my interview I'm not considered for an Engineering Officer placement, would I be considered for another path, ie just as an Officer? Or would I need to apply again?

They probably sit you down and give your options.

Just don't let them talk you into anything you're not comfortable with if that happens.

Oh, so its not a case of "nope, sorry, you can't do what you applied for, off you go"?

Any decision I make will be after due consideration and understanding - I don't intend on making any decisions on the spot. I'm very aware that it's a big commitment to make, so will make sure I'm sure :)

So close to Christmas leave, 1 week left of my course stuck down in Hampshire.

I'm not sure what I miss more, being home or being at my unit in Germany, anywhere better than here
