**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

that and bring a sense of humour, its the only thing you'll need that they dont issue with your 1157, it'll get you through when everything else fails.

Cheers guys, I expect there to be a lot of BS to try and instill discipline and obedience into us.

As regards to the issue boots, we're now getting issued the new brown combat boot down at ATR winchester so won't be able to take a spare pair for inspections, ah well.

We got 3 pairs of boots anyway. We have a few lads just getting into phase 2 with the new brown boots. They look loads better than what i have. If your wearing your brown boots at the ranges and on battle PT they will get really scuffed on the toes so i doubt you would bother getting them polished too good for inspection but who knows.

Ah, I'm sure they'll still want them 'polished to a high shine'.. To be honest, I'd be surprised if they still didn't get a black pair to go with the lightweights, unless they just use the FAD shoes..

Who knows though, dress regulations are ridiculous lol.

Finished the first week at Winchester now, got issued two pairs of standard black assault boots, one pair of goretex and then the FAD shoes.

Overall not a bad week though, a lot of admin but the pace should start picking up now

Scoff is ***** lol

You'll probably want to star that entire word out! But don't worry, it never gets any better.. unless you do a tour somewhere when they have a much higher budget for food :p.

Any advice on any courses or extra things I can do to speed my promotion up to lance jack? I know I have a 12 month period where I cannot be promoted but I want to do whatever I can to make it happen asap once the 12 months hit.

PTI? Any military qualification that allows you to teach MATS (you may need to do a DIT course first though). That is a great way to get noticed.
Organising stuff helps too. We get our young lads to organise day trips and the like. Go-karting, charity stuff, trips to London to visit parliament etc etc.
These are things that will have a big impact on your SJAR and will make you stand out from the rest of the lads that sit on their a$$ and do nothing.
There really is nothing to it if you can get one of the senior guys to give you a steer in the right direction.

They want me to run around the gym for 7 weeks to acclimatise, sounds like a lot of ******** to me.
it is. the gym wont acclimatise you, its just so your fitter so you can recover better from the heat stress. last time brize gym just signed me off, its not that essential.

worst thing about that place is the humidity, at least afghan is dry heat! enjoy yourself its a nice trip away.

If i was to do my PTI course will it mean I have to work in the gym or can i carry out my regular job?

Nah, it means you will be taking your unit/section for phys, tabs, circuits, etc :) Also look at doing AT. You are essentially getting paid to go on holiday, learn some new skills and it's content for your SJAR. You can then look to develop the skills learnt to become an insstructor and lead AT events yourself. A popular one is Mountain Leader. An excellent one is Skiing. Get yourself up to ski instructor and you will find yourself inundated with requests from units across the country requesting you take their lads skiing ;)

Non of the lads have been AT in ages but im guessing it may just be down to them not trying to do it. I did enjoy the mountain walking I did in Brecon in phase 1 and was told I showed a lot of qualities of a mountain leader. Who would I go to to get on that kinda thing? Skiing may be an option as based in Germany.

Is the basic European computer licence thing worth doing? I have already done my lvl 2 functional skills in IT, numeracy and literacy which im told is good up to SSGT.

Just will be getting like £175 a year in learning credits to start that I would rather use than lose.

Happy to brown nose alittle if it means I rank up abit faster as being 27 and a private sucks.

Thanks for advice so far.

There is a Joint Services Adventure Training Centre web page that admiinisters all the areas of AT, from scuba, to mountain leader. I can't seem to find it online though so it might be on the MOD intranet only. Have a look next time you log on to DII
, there will no doubt be a link on your home page or MOSS.

Here are a few other sites I'm sure you can get in touch with. There are several places the MLT course runs from. If you do the summer MLT you can go do the course in Cyprus for a week ;)

I found the JSP (419) for Joint Services AT scheme...

https://pdevportal.co.uk/pdf/1198_JSP419-v2.pdf

I believe you have to go through the JSATSG to apply for Mountain Leader courses but if you have a read through that JSP it lists all the delivery centres for each AT activity along with their contact details. You can always call one and enquire. Failing that, just go to your gym and they will hold literature and the staff will offer you advice on any courses or upcoming events they themsleves may have arranged.

Thanks I found course lists and applications on the defense gateway. Will go speak to my chain on what they have planned for the time the courses are running.
