**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Yep! sadly the weekend is coming to a close and I'm on my way back to camp now. Week on the ranges this week though then finishing with our ACMT, looking forward to it.

Yeah it goes quickly doesn't it!
And I remember those days, looking forward to ranges and ACMT shoots.. Hah. Good luck dude.

So you have been promoted off of two (maybe even just one?) assessment?

What even.

3, although first annual report, well 6 months, I was A/LCpl, 2nd two annual reports were both substantive LCpl. I've been promoted well ahead of most, which I'm happy about. Others may not be, but like I said, I grafted hard over the 2 1/2 years, and it has paid off.

Surely if you've been out of training only 2.5 years that means your third assessment has only just gone in, and you have been promoted off your last assessment - your first "real" one.

Can I ask what you've actually done? I mean things outside what you would be doing as part of your normal job.

Been out of phase 2 training for over 2.5 years. First report was 6 months in, as my A/LCpl, then 2 following years was reported on as a LCpl. 3rd assessment went in last month, went up to the board and I came off the promotions board.

1 Operational tour, volunteered for another tour. 3 functions, including a joint sqn level Christmas function, I've done photography for my unit unit, I've done teaching and training packages for juniors and seniors on network technologies, I've assisted well above the level expected of a LCpl on various level exercises.

Compared to others in my unit, I've done a lot.

Thanks for that. I'm not trying to suggest you haven't done a lot, just trying to get a gauge on how much one has to do to in the army to get "promotable in 30 seconds" status.

That's super quick from assessment submission to promotion board sitting isn't it? I know it's not like that in the RAF, it's normally months later!

The functions, do you mean you attended them or organised them?

It's cool. It was the first board I was eligible to come off, 2 years in substantive rank. Like I say, there are plenty others in my unit who will have sat many more boards than me, but obviously I've managed to stand out which does go to show, if you're willing to work, you can get promoted.

Erm, It's about average from receiving the report, to it being submitted, the grading board sitting, to the results being released. I actually think my report was submitted a bit later than it should have been, but only by a short while..

I organised them, first one I only assisted in, but the other two, including the Christmas function, I was lead organiser. All went down successfully which always helps lol.

It depends what trade in the RAF though. I know of some trades that take forever to get promoted, some are swift. Same applies in all services, for example some cap badges in the army come out with LCpl straight from phase 2.

For instance, I joined after Andr3w and I'm already wearing my third (sorry andr3w) :) Like others though, I have absolutely worked my ass off too so it isn't like I don't deserve it in my eye (again, not to say some others don't work hard, I have no doubt been very lucky). In the space of 5 years I completed 4 operational deployments and 2 short detachments to Germany and the US. On top of that I've done a bunch of other things surplus to requirement, that I enjoyed, but required effort. I think it helps that you're ballsy with your RO though. If my SJAR came back to me with some evidence missing or I didn't think it read well, I'd seek advice from someone who knew better, then go back and put my case forward why I would like it amending. Again, I have been lucky in that I have had good line management who will listen to me.

One further note - doesn't the Army boards pick the best nominees within a unit first? So you just have to do well against those you directly work with and you're already in with a good chance of promotion. Those names then get sent to Glasgow for further culling/promotion.

So in effect, if you're surrounded by morons, it's easy to shine with golden balls, and lets face it, the majority of people in the army really are morons ;) What cap badge are you Ghosteh?

Yeah, pretty much pick the best out of your unit. But only 6 came off out of my unit. However, my unit contains 4 squadrons, each squadron contains at least 80 odd people, with LCpl being probably the most common rank. My squadron had probably around 40 LCpls, so that's 160 odd(ish, I don't have exact numbers) in the unit that I was competing against.

I'm Signals, which in all fairness has a fast promotion on the whole. My trade used to be ridiculous promotion, as we didn't used to have to sit boards, it's only the past several years that we have had to. Never used to have to complete PNCO to get our LCpl out of Phase 2, it was literally given to you after finishing trade, not anymore however.

Got my first simunition cqb range on weds. Anyone done it before? Not looking forward to the "introduction to being shot" part of the day.
