**British Armed Forces Discussion Thread**

Hello chaps!

A friend is about to go to main board as a potential officer cadet and all that stuff - he wants to know if he will have an advantage (or not look like a pillock) by familiarising himself with:

  1. current and past British Army kit. Service weapons, webbing, how firearms actually work - that kind of thing.
  2. the Army's role in historical conflicts - the Falklands, the Gulf War, and so on.

He's very keen and doesn't want to be caught out.

From what I can remember;

Knowing as much as possible about the army's current and past operations is a must. Knowing as much as possible about the job he is applying to do is also a must.

Knowing about service issued kit probably won't help but I doubt it will hurt.

I'm sure he'll have much more luck here directing any questions here:

I was told to make sure I was up to to date with current affairs, to know the rank structure, and the values/qualities of the Army/soldier (personal qualities the army looks for in both the solider and leader). But that was years ago, and I was already in the TA.

Around 7-8 weeks into my Falkland Islands stint. The drinking culture has calmed right down! a lot less of the post-drink fighting at chucking out time at the Gull and flick-knife too! Hoping to get some visits done before the weather turns in the coming weeks / months

Everyone was turning into Gym Bunnies when I was there last and too much beer is bad those body beautiful types with their protein shakes 10 times a day and absolutely no steroids at all, none! :D

Enjoy Lyneham, it's a lot better than Bordon.

NEM is a sly one, immediate small pay jump yet in a few years i'll be thousands worse off.

Anyone used SLC/ELC and got any tips on how to make sure when you claim that it won't be denied?

It's pretty easy, just pop into you're education centre. Always very helpful. Though the last one I did, I forgot to hand it in on time and lost out. It was only 100Euros so I'm sure I'll use it again this year anyway.

you guys seen that old RAF reg "5 miler of death" video

was always popular with the Army lads :p

Brilliant that video!

Bahhahahaha

I work with him, he gets endlessly ribbed about this and has done since we discovered the vid about 12 months ago.

Poor lad, his sister made it cos she was proud of him and now he just gets **** constantly, still pretty funny though. Might go and link him to this now actually!
