British Grand Prix 2011, Silverstone Circuit - Race 9/19

I think they did... why else would they have been developing the "Octopus" exhaust system in the pre-season? All the teams knew that EBD was going to be critically important this year, as it was last year.

The octopus wasn't ever blowing the diffuser, it was blowing the floor. They just never caught onto the loophole that meant the outer portion of the diffuser was still directly blowable.

It explains perfectly why the McLaren is such a dog when the off throttle exhaust blowing is banned... There's such little airflow actually getting around its fat arse without the added air from the exhaust gas.

By the way I'm a through and through McLaren fan, i'm not bashing :p

It's just a shame that it seems that Newey has got the 'optiumum' design for these current regulations down to such a tee that to consider building a championship winning car, you've got to copy them :(

is there any rules to what shape the top of the defuser should be? becuase whats stopping the designers to make the top more of a wing shape but with no gap.

like this.

becuase i theory could the rbr team create a wing out of the hole top of the back? may hold the secrete to the rake.

I have literally no idea what you're trying to show us there, but there are very strict rules as to the dimensions of the diffuser. They're limited by both width and height.

Totally off topic, is anyone else annoyed by the interface of grid positions etc? it's like in a 4:3 format still, it really bugs me lately! surely they can change it/move it for people watching over HD or whatever.

I assume you mean the graphics on the side of the screen showing times, positions, etc?

This is provided by FOM on the world feed. Its a single feed that goes to every broadcaster in the world. It has to cope with any TV layout. Its annoying for us on widescreen, but it would be worse for people on 4:3 TV's if they moved them to the edge and then they couldn't see them. The big screens at the tracks are all 4:3 as well.

Yeah, stillll it's 2011 man, who the hell doesn't have widescreen/HD these days! sport is at the cutting edge of our tech!

don't worry. i was trying to ask a question about the shape of the top of them, if you could create some sort of airoplane wing top surface to create a mini upside down difuser.

The inverted aeroplane wing is outdated, back in the days of ground effect the entire side pod was an inverted wing enclosed by a side skirt.

The main issues with open wheel race cars are the open wheels, a large part of the aerodynamic work revolves around smoothing airflow over the wheels so they can then use it to generate grip (I am oversimplifying here somewhat but it is hugely important) or make the car more slippery in the air.

The big problem with the front wheels is they are not fixed, they are not even fixed position so every little adjustment you make to front geometry has an impact on airflow before you take into account the impact of steering the car :)

All those silly bits you see added to front wings are dealing with front wheel airflow to a large degree.

Who needs expensive CAD, CFD and wind tunnels, MS Paint is all you need for a grand prix winning car :D

Yep, really annoys me. I can perfectly see why it needs to be indented on the SD feed for those watching in 4:3 (as otherwise they'd have it cropped off), but on the HD feed it should be right at the edge of the screen, as everyone watching in HD will be on 16:9 ... unless there's some weird person watching in HD on 4:3!

Still not got around to watching the BBC coverage of the Quali and Race yet. But currently going through my pictures from the weekend.
Judging from the pictures I have here the Redbulls were going through the second part of Club during qualifying with DRS open! Insane levels of grip!

Wtf just seen the Fiat 500 Alonso advert.

Why the hell is it so badly dubbed. That's a cheap shot anyway and he can speak 4 languages and does so every race weekend.
How cheap of fiat.

I, too, am wondering why on Earth they needed to dub his voice. Surely, part of the attraction of having a "star" in an advert is to have their face and their voice.

It makes no sense whatsoever.
