BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

How can i tell/check if the cab is powered up as you say?

I know its in place and the cables have been routed as you can see where they dug the channel between the old cab and the new one.

I know elsewhere in the area from the same exchange its up and running, cant understand what the hold up is either... :/

I'm so annoyed, exchanges a few miles away already have fibre optic but my area has no plans for it, can't find out any information either. I'm stuck with 5.5MB which is not enough for my needs.

I guess I'm doomed to have slow internet while everyone else has 35MB+ lines! Very jealous..

Does anyone know why certain exchanges aren't being prepared for fibre optic or if they're ever going to be upgraded?

I thought everyone who has a BT line would be able to get fibre optic in the future.

EDIT - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_mapping

I've typed in my postcode and clicked my local exchange (Dudley) and some of the area becomes purple, what does this mean?

Apparentely if you are connected directly to the exchange you can't get fibre optic, but if you're connected to a cabinet then you might be able too.

This is a picture of the end of my street, do you think I'm connected to this cabinet:

They may as well put 2013.

Anyone wanna place bets that the next will be Sept 30th?

Just ordered BT Infinity over the phone. £41 p/m for unlimited uk landline calls and 1000 minutes to 0845/0870 numbers per month, on the unlimited package. The guy told me there is a current 300GB cap but it's being removed next month so won't affect me. Switching over from Be* cause I can only manage 5meg on adsl, BT Infinity will give me 37meg guaranteed.

Cable as long as your area does suffer from congestion.

Hmmm, ok Is there a way to tell if my area is congested? Isn't 50mb a different network so its not subject to the same volume of traffic?

It will be "humming".
I shall have to go and press my ear up against it when i next go past...!

The area thats 'served' by the exchange i'd assume. :)

Sounds most likely

Thats exactly what i'm afraid of....

At least i can get VM now. Even though their site says i cant, despite the VM cab being right outside the house with the manhole cover saying 'Cable TV' on it too. They had to send out a 'Spotter' as they didn't believe me! lol

No real issue, just means i cant order it over their website.

If you listen to it you can hear the fans, also you can feel the top on the left hand side if it's warm it's powered. On a frosty morning there will be frost on the roof on the right but not on the left.

Changed over to Infinity from BeThere around 3 weeks ago. Can't fault the service so far.

Recently speeds have dropped using Transmission though at any time of the day. Could be some settings though.

Anyone else using it?

damn just checked the bt infinity checker and it looks like the date has been pushed from the 31st March to 30th June, damn BT!!!! grrrr

I'd be happy if I even knew when my area/cabinet was due. I'd go so far to say I'd take a 2015 date, so long as I knew roughly how long to wait.

It's not on any checker and for all I know it's never coming here :/

ditto mate. im stuck on a 1.7 meg connection whilst others get 35+. some jammy gits on virgin media even get 100 meg now! 10 times as fast as me!

Im on 'up to 24meg' broadband and syncing at around 7Mbps. So all these 35Mbbps connections are mind blowing to me.. I wish! Must admit, im 3 miles from the the exchange however. Evenings are a nightmare sometimes. I cant see how infinity will improve the situation... surely the more that sign up, the more strain is put on your local exchange and the whole broadband infrastucture. It seems, whatever new technology is implemented, its run on its knees, over subscribed and not able to handle the demand due to financial constraints. If 50 people sign up to 100mbit connections then how the hell is all that additional data gonna be handled along backbone infrastructure without costings hundreds of thousands.

Main exchange in town has it, but not mine :(. My exchange serves 5,414 residential premises & 137 non-residential premises apparently. No date set for the exchange (let alone my Cabinet).

Ever since they enabled the exchange I've been on O2/Bethere ADSL2+. Get between 10 and 13 meg depending on the alignment of the stars.
I keep meaning to rewire the internal wiring as I know it's naff, but never get round to it!
As EVH said, a date would make all the difference. Even if it was next year that's still a date rather than not at all! Still, if I really want more I could always get a second O2/Bethere ADSL2+ connection on the second phone line (had ISDN on it back in the day) and bond them.

I'm also switching from Be* to BT Infinity, what speed did they say you'd get? From what I've heard most people are getting speeds faster than BT have quoted.

Ask someone else in the same street to do a speedtest during peak time? :p

See if VM offer a trial.

BitTorrent is traffic shaped on all BT Infinity products.
