BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Im no big downloader, but when i do download, i want it now... Thats why i got FTTC, Caps don't worry me, Yet :)

Still getting 35mb here, only 1.5mb upload on my 2mb limit. Might pay more to get 10mb, Not sure its worth it though.

you need to specifically ask for 10mb upstream i was told.i have a relative who is the local bt engineer and told me all about the 7 week backlog and how everyone is being provisioned for 2mb up not 10mb and i needed to make sure i had 10mb upstream on my order before he comes to do the install as once he is there he cannnot change from 2mb to 10mb.

so yea be aware anyone out there ordering.make sure you ask for 10mb up!

oh wait dont ur gonna hog all my bandwidth :D

Rofflay, I've been in exactly the same situation with you, re: neighbors and having to move. Glad to hear it'll be over for you soon.

Back on topic, i'd also be interested in answers to Rofflays questions, as I've just moved to an area that can support BT Infinity. I'm pretty much the same as him with games and download habits!

sorry MallowPhoto

im so blind i missed ur post! look up my noisy neighbours post for some amusement, ive had no help from anyone despite tons of video evidence so thier giving me a new home to make up for that which i guess im ok with as long as i can upload at 10mb right?:p

neways ill know by wednesday if its 100% mine right now its 99% mine i just need the past tennant to sign on the paper!

on to what you said it seems BT themselves will be fine as they are cheap with phone calls included if you look at the unlimited with calls option.they are apparantly scrapping the 300gb cap from april and if you need a new line you get free installtion.im hoping ill get free installation anyways as its £28pm + £10 rental if you pay the year up front £120 whch is not bad.

considering i pay £35 for zen 8mb with 100gb cap i dont think there are any deals near this going on.Its only 18 months how bad can bt get within 18 months? i reckon it will be 20 months before fttc starts to get a little congested so personally im going to go BT mate and i hope this helps you decide.Im very fussy as well so i will be speedtesting for a 1mb drop every night ;)

no doubt though and mark my words it wont last as within 2 years bt will find that they simply wont be able to sustain everyone using 40mb and it will simply be adsl all over again with shaping and congestion.i cant see any other outcome than this really and its the sole reason i paid zen so much to have iplayer in HD with no buffering 24/7.i guess if you want that kind of service you have to cough up sadly :(

I should be getting BT Infinity installed this week, predicted speeds for my area:

download: 28mpbs
upload: 6mpbs

Should be a good increase considering im coming off a crappy 3mbps line atm, are people relatively happy with the quality of service/speed they get from Infinity? My family have been customers with BT for years but what are peoples experiences with FTTC service?

Cheers

You will love every second of it.

My dad said that the line could handle 6mbps max and that was what we were getting? in MegaBytes apparently...

6MB/s = 48Mb/s, I suspect theres confusion here, as as stated BT do not offer this speed. But I've noticed you mentioned virgin. Is it a possibility that your dad is mixing up what a virgin salesperson has told him he can achieve via cable internet and what a BT salesperson has said is achievable via phone line? (Note cable internet is not the same as phoneline internet). 48Mb/s seems conveniently close to the 50Mb/s service virgin offer when you account for some overheads.

I then went on the BT Speed Checker for my area and it said 6mbps Once again im assuming its MegaBytes? We are currently on Virgin, but When he put the floor down in the Livingroom hoping to run the Virgin Cable under the Skirtings that he bought from a certain useless Retail store caused problems with Signal etc so he was looking into switching and saving a bit of money etc Apparently he said it was the BT gold package or something?

It goes from distance to the local green cabinet, not the exchange.

(No)

Just to confirm, as in this local green cabinet at the end of some roads or some other 'exchange'?

if so i may look at getting bt infinity!

Realised I may have stated the ovbious, but want to be sure before i switch over from VM and then suffer a 8mb connection on a "up to 40mb" line.

That looks like a standard cabinet, but it's possible they've gutted it to upgrade it.

The new ones look like:

That looks like its been vandalised?

Its the old one i think, the new Infinity ones are taller IIRC.

EDIT: Beaten to it.

Phoned BT today and got an install date! 1 week tomorrow my downloads should be 60+ times faster!! :D Never thought it would come to my village.

31st March was my live date for infinity, just checked again today and its gone up to the 30th June... :(

Currently on Be with 6mb down and 1mb up.

The checker says....

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 30th June 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 35.1Mbps and upstream line speed of 9.1Mbps.
Looking at providers i'm thinking of ADSL24's Fibre 30 Pro or IDNET's Home Plus Fibre

Anyone have any other recommendations?

That or 50mb Virgin Media?

Yeah I have the same dates, even though my exchange is live and most of the cabs can be ordered from.

My cab is active and powered up, I don't understand the delay.
