BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I wasn't aware Zen use Talk Talk for backhaul. Contrary to what you may think, the TT network is actually really good.

Oh really? that's somewhat promising.

Just to give some background information the package I am on now is 52mb and I get that speed with 14ms ping. So if I'm getting that type of performance on FTTC does that bode well for FTTP?

As in if I were on Zen's backhaul and experiencing performance issues like other people have been getting I would see that with my existing internet connection?

For the first time ever, my fibre has been down today.

Red light on the ONT. Contacted BT who ran a line test and immediately booked an engineer for tomorrow morning.

Was working absolutely fine until a highway maintenance van showed up, at which point it went down.

Wonder if they’ve cut a cable

So we're due to get FTTP installed on Friday, we've gone for the 900MB package. What speeds am I likely to see? It seems everyone gets 900MB or over which is cool but are there any people here who went for the 900MB package but get 600MB-700MB for example?

Forgot to update this.

They did break the cable(s) - complete loss of fibre to the properties on my estate.

Thankfully BT were excellent and had an engineer out the following day at 8am, with the internet being up and running by mid day.

Wondering if the highway maintenance were trying to steal copper cables?

Least it was quickly restored, what were highway maintenance doing?

Toob visited me recently and said they're live in my area soon, I've previously registered interest with them as well.

It's £25/month for 18 months I think, but is 900/900 instead of the 900/120 I'm paying BT £55/month for currently (contract is up in April coming, went up from £50/month last April).

Only reasons I can think of for not going ahead:
  • Newish ISP so not sure on long term reliability. BT has been rock solid.
  • I rely on Internet for WFH so it having downtime is an issue I'd rather avoid if I can. BT can ship a 4g or 5g hub for backup if it goes down, but Toob won't.
  • It's CGNAT so no external IP can be used for port forwarding to anything internal. Not a huge deal, but does limit options. Static IP is an extra £8/month on top.
It's a significant saving, and in theory a faster speed, but still wondering if it's the best move vs getting the Openreach version via a more traditional ISP or lowering my speed a little. 900 down is nice but not strictly necessary most of the time.

Thoughts?

This may have been answered before, so apologies. All being well, we'll be moving in the not too distant future but it seems Virgin (HFC) are the only providers in the street (according to bidb) and whilst that'll probably be fine most of the time, historically I've always had bad peering/latency with them in previous houses and we have FTTP now with no issues in 7 years. I've checked the wholesale address checker, which only shows G.Fast 300/50 as the fastest available, and the OR fibre checker shows that "Build planned between now and Dec-2026" which is... quite a range.

Is there any hidden little links or anything somewhere to get a bit more specific build date than that? I did see them working on the green cabinet on the street when I drove past before Christmas but that could really be anything!
