BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I've been getting intermittent stability issues with my line (900mb infinity).

I'm pretty sure it's my aging Asus RT-AC66U running an old merlin firmware is the issue, as rebooting that (and not the ONT) sorts it.

On a related note....my contract is up in June, and as prices are going up....is it worth shopping around? Can I get a no hassle change to an alternative provider? I can live with going down to 500/100.

If you still have it, it'd be worth putting the BT SmartHub in place and seeing if the issues remain. If you don't it's unlikely that BT will be overly interested in helping you.

It's definitely worth shopping around. I think the upstream on the 500Mbps product is 70Mbps, so not quite 100Mbps but not a million miles off.

That old Asus router is probably past it’s best, especially for those sort of speeds. The standard BT hub will perform a lot better I’m sure.

Always worth shopping around for a deal though, it will be completely hassle free to swap over. On the due date you either swap to the new router of just change the login details and you’re up and running again.

I'd swap it over, but the Asus router is connected to my laser printer and acts as a wireless print server, which it doesn't appear the BT hub will do, so it's a non-starter.

EDIT: Realised the printer is actually running off my NAS, not the router :D

Will probably look at replacing the router with a standalone router and separate wifi mesh system tbh.

Ideal then. The RT-N66U has been out since 2012, while an absolutely cracking router it's old technology now. I retired mine last year after using it as a Wifi AP for work for many years after upgrading from it as a main router at home. Currently running OPNsense and Unifi AP's.

Hey guys,

Ended up going with Aquiss in the end, ordered the 900/100 connection last night.

How long do they usually take from order to installation and any router recommendations please?

Thanks

Noticed that my speeds have dropped recently. On Infinity 2, have been on it for years, ever since it came to my road.

At one point it seemed to be creeping up. I think I was getting almost the max possible from 80mbps as the cabinet is about 20 metres away.

Now my router says 60mbps and that is about the best I get now. I rang up and they waffled on about guaranteed speeds but they wouldn't say why my speeds had dropped.

Then they said it might be because of rolling outing FTTP so I said great, when am I getting it? then they said check this site (not this site, some other one I didn't write down) but I retorted by reminding them they had brought up the FTTP part to which they said it was just nationwide and they had no local info.

Am I being blagged or are speeds just dropping?

FTTC is all about line quality and line quality is not a fixed value, it changes over time.

How long is a piece of string is the crux of the question, it could be any number of things impacting it. Perhaps your cabinet has filled up and you are getting a lot of cross talk, perhaps there was a fault on another line and yours was disturbed as part of the fix. There could have been some degradation of the line due to environmental factors etc.

If it’s above the minimum speed threshold, they are probably not going to do anything about it.

Not sure if anyone has any experience with something like this...
The company around here that's doing FTTP isn't Openreach it's Wildanet. Now they've got a government contract/grant thing (see here) and when I've been enquiring with them they've requested a UK Gigabit voucher on my behalf that I have to authorize.
Does anyone know how this will work with Openreach (assuming they'll come here at some point)? If I use it with Wildanet does that mean Openreach can't use it and I'll have to pay more to get Openreach FTTP installed or does the voucher not apply to Openreach and it for use with Wildanet or nobody?

I guess what I'm asking is if anyone with Openreach installed FTTP has had to authoize a voucher for them?

Ok if I see anyone in it I'll tell them. Other than that I'm just going to assume more users have slowed it down

Will an Asus RT-AC86U be compatible with Aquiss full fibre? To connect direct to the ONT.

I'm planning to go with either the 300 or 500 package.

WAN specs...

Internet connection Type : PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, Automatic IP, Static IP
Dual WAN
3G/4G LTE dongle
Android tethering
Port forwarding
Maximum port forwarding rule : 64
Port triggering
Maximum port triggering rule : 32
DMZ
DDNS
NAT Passthrough : PPTP, L2TP, IPSec, RTSP, H.323, SIP Passthrough, PPPoE relay

As long as it will support PPPoE then yes, it will be compatible. Aquiss don't do anything funky such as VLANs or DHCP option 61 etc.

Okay great. Aquiss will be my first taste of FTTP.

I've been on 72/18Mb FTTC for years.

I really hope they don't do any form of traffic shaping.
