BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT Infinity is very tempting.

Im still having problems with one site using Bethere.

www.newsnow.co.uk, has been fairly inaccessable to me and other for over a week now.

Be there have acknowledged there is a problem, but have said its down to a third party, and they I should contact them directly!

Thats unaccpetable to be honest, and is not the first time I'v experienced network issues with them. It used to be DNS problems, now its congestion and third parties.

Other than that Be have ben top class however... so its a difficult decision to move away, especially in to the open arms of BT!

Thing is with BT, I would get faster speeds and probably save money on phone/broadband bills in the process.

P2P throttling is a slight problem however.

Again I dont do much, but in the future there will be stuff I will want to get.

Things like new series of spartacus @ 1.5Gb an episode... etc... will be a problem to only be able to download after midnight. Not a big problem, but an inconvinience.

Do we have any big torrenters here using infinity?

Becuase p2p is probably the only outstanding issue I can see with BT Infinity.

I use torrents now and again, during peak times I never get over 30Kbps, So I connect through VPN and pull full speed.

Usually use newsgroups which is just solid flat line 37.5mbit 24/7 (So far)

I pay for mine.

They do say they offer 100 free account monthly, Not been able to grab one in time so far.

There are free VPN's like http://www.expatshield.com, Not sure if they restrict torrents tho, will check and update

Update: Expatshield p2p capped to 10Kbps, download is fine tho 3meg/s atm

Speedtest through free ExpatVPN -

Shame about torrent cap.

I using encryption on my utorrent. They will still cap p2p if I dont use vpn?

So what your saying about expat vpn, is that it works for getting uncapped downloads, but upload is still capped?

Also using vpn is still considered illegal you know that!

If for instance, you was taken to court for illegal file sharing, the very FACT that you use a vpn to hide your activites, would be proof (not the opposite) of guilt.

Same goes with encryption. If you encrupt something, but dont provide the key, when requested, that makes you guilty, even if there is no proof.

Is thie correct, 30kbps peak times on torrents? That is a joke if so.

I don't download a lot but when I do I want it pretty much asap.

uTorrent encryption does not work :(

Yes, Upload is only limited to 10kbps because of expat not BT.

Its more about masking your IP with torrents, thats how you would get caught, so with a VPN a large number of people could be sharing a single IP at any time.

If there was a DMCA compliant, It would be hard to trace who it actually was.

I doubt BT would come after you for using a VPN.

Yeah peak times its capped to 30Kbps, Bit of a joke... Oh and the upload is always capped to 1mbit 24/7 for P2P.

Also to add to my current Be issues, they have started blocking sites like filesonic, oron and other hosting websites.

Supposedly* according to them, even BT do the same.

Could some one confirm this?

Again, they are implementing the will of the IWF, so they have blocked these sites.

An odd question for you, what is their definition of P2P.

Say for example I was to upload to a distribution server, for say streaming. Any ideas if that would that would be considered P2P? An example would be ustream or Livestream.

I use zumocast to stream films to my mates and they are able to download off me at full speed 1MB/s, So its just torrents not sure how they do it tbh.

Also can send files over MSN at full speed

Zumocast is awesome, anyone that hasn't seen it before.

I think things like uStream your data goes to their server first to mask your IP before going out to viewers so isn't really p2p, like MSN does... ;) I aint 100% tho

Cheers for the info.

I will never use an ISP that filters any of my traffic or blocks access to any sort of website

What I chose to use my connection for is my business, and my business only.

Seems that BT also use the IWF filter.

So the only outstanding issue I can see with me moving from Be to BT, would be the p2p throttling...

Buying a vpn subscription... seems a little bit counter intuitive, as the point of p2p is freedom.

But I suppose needs must.

Should I do it?

I envisage I would get about 30+ Mbps out of my line as I currently 19Mbps out of 24Mbps line, and I would probably save money on the phone/Broadband bundle.

But tell me, even when you can download at such fast speeds, would i see any difference, compared to what I have now?

The one thing that has pushed me to think about BT Infinity is the fact that still I cannot access www.newsnow.co.uk, using Be.

They just keep on experiencing on off network issues constantly.

Can anyone who had Infinity installed advise on whether the engineer gives assistance in putting in extension cables?

I understand that you need to use the master socket only so I want to route cables upstairs. There already is conduit in place but it would involve routing a cable down from the attic. I guess they don't want any hassle.

They routed around to the other end of our living room (where there were enough plug sockets to accomodate everything). Not the same as taking it upstairs though.
