BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

If I was to go with BT Infinity, I would require a master socket to be installed in my loft, which gets its connectivity, I can only imagine though an extension cable.

Would they or can they install a master socket, at the end of an extension cable (in a loft conversion)?

Alternatively, if they cant, they install the master socket downstairs, but I still install the modem and router upstairs, on the end of the extension, as it is now?

Not sure the rules on them installing extensions ect.

I have my vdsl Modem downstairs on the main socket and then have a cat5 coming from that through the ceiling into my homehub3

Why are people getting their speeds throttled? I'm getting full speed on torrents throughout the whole day :S

U can max out your upload on a torrent??

My downloading on torrents is fine till 5pm 4.3meg/s right now, Upload wont go over 100Kbps tho

Yeah I'm on BT Infinity, had it for about two weeks now and I'm not getting any speed drops on torrents at all. Flat out 4.3/4.4 MB/s.

What are you doing differently to everyone else? You're not using a VPN? What torrent client are you using?

Just seems strange that every other BT Infinity user has their torrents throttled to around 20kb/s at peak times and uploads limited to a max 100kb/s all the time and you don't.

I'm not doing nothing extraordinary tbh, port 1720 on utorrent and using private torrent sites. Although I get around 3.8-4.0MB/s on public torrent sites like isohunt.

Well i overheard my nextdoor neighbour saying he now had nice fast internet now using his parents log on.

Checked my settings and BT FON has turned itself on.

Try to log on to the FON website to opt out and it wont accept my username and password, guess im going to have to phone BT up and get it turned off, this is going to be painful but im not giving my deadbeat neighbours free web.

Ah yes BT FON :p

Im not going to google but its not free unless you yourself opt into BT FON or BT BB package? Im assuming his rents use BT BB elsewhere and hes now using that to get some of your bandwidth? lol!

Im between houses atm and havent ordered infinity yet as i want to be sure im there living in that house for training period and i noticed some wireless networks coming up in the area inc BT FON.

I disabled noscript and adblock plus in firefox as it was blocking the webpage asking me for only £3 for a days internet!

£3!! ps can his rents be online and can he use thier usernames to access bt fon at the same time?

rofl :p

By default its on aparently, but it wasnt why it first set up, it apparently takes time to turn on. turning it off is as simple as logging on to the FON site and saying no thanks BUT my BT log in is screwed up cause it only works on 1 of the 3 places it should (works for BT yahoo but not fon or BT.com) its something to do with the fact that my log in is back from the old BTopenworld early days of ADSL.

Hi

Opted out of BT FON before, heard it can take upto 7 days to disable on the HomeHub. Wasn't enabled when I first got Infinity installed randomly turned itself on.

Does BT FON only work with the HomeHub or does it work through any router?

If it works through any router, then would it be possible to restrict speeds to random FON users?

The more I hear aboutthis the less apealing.

Fine you have super speeds. But other than things like steam etc... I cant see much benefit for regular websites as my 1.9MBps speed is fast enough.

Also whats the point in fast speeds if p2p is throttled, and your usage is limited?

Thats the beauty of Be and its marketing appeal. Its trully unthrottled, and truly unlimited. Yes, its older tech now and halfthe speeds of BT infinity, but you havethe freedom to do with your line what you like.

Add to this equation BT Fon, and it sounds like a nightmare.

My main concern with FON was that surely any traffic that passes through it could be counted against your usage, if you were on the package that had a 40gb cap or for people on the 300gb cap prior to the cap being lifted any random user could hop on there and blow the cap for you

I havent disabled FON because i figure it will be handy when im away from home with work to be able to login to hotel/airport hotspots which im expecting to do a lot more soon due to my job role changing and because the wifi i have doesnt seem to stretch outside my building too well, still it doesnt prevent my neighbours deciding to use my broadband if its faster than their own.. i have yet to test if FON clients appear in the hub at all (dhcp leases etc) and if they dont it would be effectively invisible

Ill likely switch out the homehub as the solution, was planning to do that anyway with the wifi dropping out on occasions
