BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Having an absolute nightmare with my FTTC for the last 2 days, constantly getting 'looking up www.', timeouts, dropped connection, speed has dropped from a rock solid 38mbit to 30, upload speed has halved, ping times have doubled.

All started since the hot weather kicked in really....can the temperatures affect the line from the cabinet to my house?

I've moved my modem from next to my amp to literally just on the floor behind it all and it seems more stable so far.

I just want my interleaving level to go down!

I have been told that if i am moving my phone line and broadband from another provider and want to keep my same number then i can't order BT infinity 2 straight away. First i have to transfer my phone line and order BT DSL broadband and then i can order BT infinity 2.

Any body else with similar experience?

Not happy as BT have upweighted my bill package now despite telling me it would stay the same. Contract extension and £10 a month more to pay.

Nice for them I guess.

I still have not upgraded my line to 80mbit, i just don't have the strength to phone BT again.

But the last few weeks i have been having poor SSH performance, it keeps hanging and causing me to disconnect. BT is clearly messing with it. Not surprising that they get you in to the long contracts then half way through start shaping protocols and blocking sites.

If you can afford it, I can highly recommend Zen. Exactly the reason I went for them.. I use my line for working from home every day of the week, and I don't have time to debug why my 2 VPNs, or SSH sessions suddenly start breaking. Guaranteed they don't mess around with your connection in the slightest, 80/20 is a free upgrade, and as it's classed as a "business" connection, or premium, you get a certain megabit/sec of 'guaranteed' bandwidth priority on the network.

Woeful usage limits though.

Yea i used to be with zen adsl in 2005/06. They are a good isp. I am stuck in a bt contract for another year+ so not much i can do now.

Zen fiber prices are not too bad, but that price does not include the bt phone line rental and vat i would assume. So it adds up.

At the moment i pay £40 a month for unlimited but ssh appears shaped bt business and £18 month for a basic business phone line.

1TB isn't enough?
I wouldn't say I'm a light downloader and I only use up to 350GB at the very most per month.

If you're referring to the cost per gigabyte, as I said above you get what you pay for. Untouched, internet with higher priority than BT, no shaping, static IP(s), excellent support, etc. If you don't care about any of these things, don't pay, but I'm directly referring to someone who is trying to use their line for business and now cannot use SSH, which is unacceptable for me.

Bummer about the contract. No, that does not include line rental, so it absolutely isn't cheap. You get what you pay for :)

6 weeks since I've placed the order and BT is still saying "Problems booking the engineer- will call back in a "few" days". Is there anything I can do about this?

All ready for my install on Friday now disconnected all the extensions run in parallel with mains cables when the house was built. I've rewired one and run a bit of CAT 6 external from near the master to the man cave upstairs.
