BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Hrm, a couple of times lately I've had to reset the openreach modem as speeds will drop to 0.3Mbps or so. Anyone else had his issue? As soon as I reset the modem it's back up to 40.

Why do you care about 300kbps? The more you restart your modem, the higher the interleave setting your line will be put on.

Ah, sorry, I misread.

Is the modem well ventilated?

It's on a small table so yes, although it does feel quite hot to the touch lately (probably sun hitting it through the window). I'll give BT a call when I get home and ask if there's anything they can do. :)

Yeah there is loads of different levels of interleave.

Also different IP's on BT will give lower/higher pings to certain sites. I usually reboot my router a few times till I get nice pings to BBC, Multiplay and Jolt.

Hello cp88 - hope you're still reading this thread!

Just got connected to Infinity 2 days ago and am a bit disappointed my pings - getting about 20ms to bbc.co.uk from SW London, when I used to get 5-6ms with Be.

Do you have any tips for time of day or phase of the moon re: different IPs and better latency? Does the above advice still apply? I still get a 5-6ms first hop with Infinity but it gains about 15ms on the way to the BBC :(

Why is Virgin Media lagging behind BT Infinity in the upload stakes??

Technology and investment in infrastructure. HFC/DOCSIS isn't very good at upstream. Everyone would have a much better gaming connection on VM if they went back to a more sensible 1-2mbps up.

Most likely you're going trough the Ilford hop which you can't do much about.

Do a traceroute to bbc.co.uk and see if there's the Ilford hop in there. If so, you're unlikely to see sub 15ms.

Here's a couple of traceroutes I had saved from last night - ilford appears in the second one, but not the first. I added the early hop IPs to my hosts file to speed up the tracert - got sick of waiting for the reverse DNS lookup to fail.

Code:
Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms a.router [10.1.1.254]

I'm looking at moving, the exchange is accepting orders, yet the house can only get normal BB. Meh. They told me on the phone October this year, just wondered where I could monitor that online as I've seen others do it.

Is there anywhere I can check estimated rollout dates for cabinent upgrades, my exchange is now allegedly "accepting orders" but I can't find any plans for the cabs (I've heard about checking local planning applications but I couldn't find what I was looking for).
