BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I have no idea on dates unfortunately - my cabinet took nearly/over? a year from exchange 'accepting orders' to actually being enabled. Using the old PCP excel sheet I entered all of the postcodes that were on the same cab as me onto a site which lets you show a heap of address on google maps (for a vague estimate on cabinet location) and then checked Elgin (http://roadworks.org/ now?) for telephone works by BT.

I don't think it really helped much... except it gave me something to do.

I'm looking at moving, the exchange is accepting orders, yet the house can only get normal BB. Meh. They told me on the phone October this year, just wondered where I could monitor that online as I've seen others do it.

Is there anywhere I can check estimated rollout dates for cabinent upgrades, my exchange is now allegedly "accepting orders" but I can't find any plans for the cabs (I've heard about checking local planning applications but I couldn't find what I was looking for).

Hello cp88 - hope you're still reading this thread!

Just got connected to Infinity 2 days ago and am a bit disappointed my pings - getting about 20ms to bbc.co.uk from SW London, when I used to get 5-6ms with Be.

Do you have any tips for time of day or phase of the moon re: different IPs and better latency? Does the above advice still apply? I still get a 5-6ms first hop with Infinity but it gains about 15ms on the way to the BBC :(

Hmm well some IPs you get assigned will give you better ping results to certain servers, I usually open up 4-5 pings to different sites, reconnect a few times till I see <15ms on all, but its literally only 3-6ms difference, hardly worth it! I wouldn't even bother doing it if my connection didn't stay up for weeks at a time.

I have done extensive troubleshooting which leads me to the conclusion that it is the BT line itself that has started to cause problems with ssh connections.

I experienced the same sort of problems years ago on virgin, where the ssh connection would stutter and freeze and disconnect. It occurs when the ISP shape ssh protocol to prevent people from using it.

My SSH is working fine, been connected for 15 days straight, didn't know the unlimited package had limits? has something changed? :)

Guessing your just having home networking problems.

i am currently on BE, but my mate is getting BT infinity and said i should get it but as far as i was aware i dont have cable in my area.He lives close to me and so not sure how he is getting it.I did the online checker on bt infinity website and it says i can get it now.I am not clued up with how BT infinity works but i always thought you needed fibre cable in your area.

My exchange is ne225dz Bedlington

Nope, FTTC (BT Infinity os one option) is separate to cable, i.e. Virgin Media.

Your exchange is FTTC enabled, you could order BT Infinity assuming the cabinet you are connected to has been upgraded.

Type your number into the BT Infinity website and see if you can order.

Edit : Just fully read your post, you already checked with BT, they say you can get it, hence you can order it.

Just a quick update, connection has been very rock solid since they fixed the problem/glitch on my line:

Also I have not been capped on p2p for a good two weeks or so now, much longer than ever before. Really pleased with the service thus far.

HangTime: If you look at your council's site, go to planning section, you should be able to search for cabinets by postcode, location.
You can go in to most councils planning office, & ask for a search of any planning applications, most councils seem to be free I've used.

Searching for my postcode turns up nothing, searching by town name just throws up pages about home extensions and house builders. Normally I'm pretty good at working out how to search for stuff, tighten up parameters etc but this one has me foxed: http://www.fareham.gov.uk/planningonline/intro.asp?section=application_searches
