BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

So, I've had Infinity for a bit over 2 weeks now, and it's been 'ok'. I think I posted in here earlier about routing, and I think I've managed to come to the same conclusion that Rroff came to almost a year ago.

So, on Be, I got 5-6ms first hop and 6-7ms to bbc.co.uk. On Infinity, I get 5-6ms first hop, and 17-21ms to BBC.

So I eventually figured out that I'm being routed via Sheffield. From London. So my traffic in south-west London goes to Sheffield, then to London, then out onto the wider internet.

I guess I was expecting better from the national telco - if Telstra were doing something so utterly backwards in Australia (where I'm from, but been here 5 years) there'd be a massive outcry on whirlpool.net.au.

Thread here:

Of note in that thread is that flamey, who is in Essex, gets 7ms to the bbc and appears to have a fairly sensible route... :(

You are not going to get an answer posting on their forums, every single one of them on there are complete and utter noobs and script monkeys.

I would email Ian Livingston, I currently have a case with him and all is going well so far and the guys I'm talking to know what they are on about.

We're about to have Fibre enabled at our exchange.

BT have told me that the go-live date is only an estimation and could be changed, but I've seen about 50 BT vans in and around the area over the past month and there's green cabinets springing up everywhere.

I'm currently with Plus.Net for BB and they offer fibre but unfortunately not the speeds of Infinity 2. Are BT the sole provider of up to 76Mbit fibre?

Also relieved to hear from this topic that on install BT will move the master socket. Ours is in the kitchen :( and dont fancy having the Mrs moan about having a router and modem in there.

No. Any ISP that has an agreement to use BT's FTTC service can provide the faster speed for a slight price increase (on the ISP's end). Most of the ISPs I've seen outside of BT who provide fibre services are offering 80mbps now. I have it, and I'm with Zen.

Thanks lozzd, your point made me wonder if my current ISP (plus.net) were in fact just not advertising 80/20. After some digging round it appears they do provide it but its a trial service currently whilst they upgrade all there hardware.

Just waiting to hear back from a support rep as to whether I can be enrolled in the trial ready for 30th June :D

But the actuall Fibre Optic connection it'self doesnt come right into your home , it would end at those green boxes in the street and from there to your home would still be the old coaxel cable ?

There is no coax between the cabs and home, it's bog standard phone cable IIRC (can't remember how many pairs it has, days gone by it was 4, unsure if this is still the case). Only Virgin use coax in that sense.

I can appreciate the need to "go top the top" when you have long-term, frustrating problem that isn't getting sorted. However, chasing a CEO about a routing issue? Hmm... In fact, you could say it's not even an issue, just what seems to be odd network design.

I'd also note you get what you pay for and that includes support. We have several hundred broadband customers at work and will openly admit to them that we aren't as cheap as BT. But then if they have problem, they aren't ringing a call centre (let alone one in India) but the guys who have built and configured their network.

Count yourself lucky. My exchange in West Yorkshire has still not been upgraded yet to Fibre and I doubt we will get anything till next year :(.

Thats a downer :(

When I phoned Virgin to ask about when they were going to upgrade my net to the higher speeds from 30Mbps to 60Mbps ..they actually made me an offer i take an extra 12 months from them and they would upgrade my speed straight away...I did , and so did they , And all for £10 cheaper too :)

I was actually contemplating of moving back to Virgin but opted out. I think i'll wait it out and stick with BE for now. Thankfully i'm on a month by month contract so I can cancel at anytime.

Come to think of it, Is there any way I can push them do start doing something? I've already called them up a few times but they won't give an ETA :(.

Sorry I meant with BT, rang them up a few times but they won't give me an ETA on when they will enable Fibre at my exchange. I'm with Be at the moment.

People keep recommending BE simply becuase BE managed to build up a rep as the 'good guys' isp.

The reality is they lost this image in reality a while back with the continuos network issues they suffer from.
