BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

In all the time I've had Virgin Media Internet (Blueyonder before Virgin took it over) I've never had any issues with connection that would get me thinking about changing my ISP , And because of that...I would recomend them too :)

Sorry I meant with BT, rang them up a few times but they won't give me an ETA on when they will enable Fibre at my exchange. I'm with Be at the moment.

I can't imagine the tech support guy you speak to over the phone will be able to make those sorts of decisions/changes. Pretty sure it costs a significant amount to bring FTTx let alone FTTC to an exchange.

Managed today to have a chat with an engineer who had a fibre cabinet opened up. Supposedly was doing some final testing before handing it over to BT (he was a contractor from a company called telnet). Very nice bloke, ended up giving me a quick overview of whats in your average FTTC cabinet. Almost like a mini-server stack inside.

Although not a picture I've taken an FTTC cabinet looks like this (without DSLAM)

The important part is the grille's as standard telephone cabinets wont have these.

I envy you guys :(.

Regarding Be, they have really gone downhill lately. The service has been pretty poor as I have been experiencing fluctuating speeds for the past few months and it got to the point of bordering frustration. They did however acknowledge that the problem was from their end. Also BE not doing moving to Fibre anytime soon raises eyebrows about their longevity in the BroadBand sector which is a worry.

If your exchange does not have FTTC enabled then it's not BE fault. Check on samknows to see if there is any info about FTTC and the LLU operators.

Jeez you must be literally next door to the exchange.

If that's the case, then he won't be able to get FTTC as homes near the exchange are usually connected directly to it :p But he must be living very close to his cabinet to get those estimates... and the estimates are usually lower than what you get, I was estimated 33mb but am actually receiving 44mb.

Nope, buildings directly connected to the exchange are unfortunately stuck with copper ADSL :(. It would be too expensive for BT to replace all these with fibre.

Routing issues notwithstanding, my estimate was 57.8 meg and I get:

Code:
Max: Upstream rate = 33600 Kbps, Downstream rate = 92688 Kbps
Path: 0, Upstream rate = 20000 Kbps, Downstream rate = 79999 Kbps
