BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Rids,
Get rid of the HH3 to one side and get a good cable router, Billion 7800N or the ASUS RT-N56U which has a 4 way GIGABIT switch and then as a seperate single CAT5E cable to a second GIGABIT SWITCH.

Thats what I have done for the setup here, now going to run a CAT5E cable into the workshop from the switch instead of wireless no drop outs and far better performance for gaming than wireless.

Current set up here is;

BT MODEM -> Billion 7800N -> 8 port NETGEAR GIGABIT Switch -> 3 PC's, Xbox360, PS3 and 3 wireless PC's Printer and a Laptop also have 3 Blackberry Phones on there and a Android Phone too

Works a treat. The Billion has been just brilliant and no problem changed from a BT Business Hub HG2701(CRAP!!!) only 54G wireless!! and never looked back.

As said before in posts the HH3 only has one GIGABIT connection and is a poor wireless if you need it.

Do you find you lose any throughput going through a switch at all? I am looking to do something very similar to yourself. I really want to be able to hook up my xbox laptops etc wired to my 7800n router but i dont want reels of cable along my floor as my router is located quite far away. With a 4 port gigabit switch on my desk i'll only need 1m of cat5e cable which i'll just make myself. As long as it doesn't have any real effect like loss of speed from not being connected directly to the router im gonna go for it

Thanks for the advice RE: HH3 - I was planning on ditching it anyway as I have an N66-U sitting here from my days on Virgin. I did try it earlier but couldnt seem to get it to work, however a bit of googling has revealed that its likely an issue with the BT cable that gos from the Infinity modem to the HH3 - apparently despite it looking just like a standard CAT5/6 cable, its actually not. Going to try swapping that out and go from there.

As an aside, instead of purchasing a switch and running a cable back to the router do you see any issues with just running a cable from the modem to the N66-U and saving on the switch all together?

Edit: Editted for speeling.

Rids: All I'm using is a ordinary CAT 6 cable to connect between BT modem & my 7800N.

Why not use the cable that came with HH3.

I've got the N66-U working now, I have no idea what the issue was with cables, just something I stumbled accross on google earlier from somebody who had set up a N56-U and was having the same issues as I was with getting it work!

So on the plus side, proper router is set up and I have two channels of WiFi goodness. At the moment its still on the opposite side of the room from all the lovely things I want to plug into it, however I think at this point I'm just going to invest in 20 metres of CAT 6 and run a cable along the skirting board.

Thanks for your help all, much appreciated.

Not seen any loss with the switch:cool::cool: and I currently have Xbox360, PS3, Sky+HD box, and a gamming rig which is on the end of a 30m cable.

My son regularly has games running and Skype and P2P. No slowing at all;);) Running Speedtest and Pingtest I get full speed and a grade A for Infinity which at the Mo is 40/10 on a Business Line, but looking to upgrade to the 80/20 unlimited service for an extra 5 quid!!:cool:

Over the next few days I will be running a CAT5E cable in to my Business workshop and adding a second Switch so I can have my 3 Works PC's and Printer all on the LAN rather than having Wireless just for added security AND SPEED LoL. But will mean that there is just the wifes Laptop on Wireless with the phones.

As for the cable I have just used standard UTP CAT 5E cables and no problem with the GIGABIT network, it is only if you get to the max range of 300ft that you need to go with the CAT6 stuff.;)

Ok - need some advice about my BT Infinity / Networking set up if anybody can help.

After gettomg my BT Infinity setup I have a set up that looks like this

BT Modem > Home Hub 3 > Powerline Adaptors > PC

This is not ideal as it means I'm unable to plug my server / PS3 / XBOX 360 into the network, as they are situated nowhere near the HH.

I tried going with this set up BT Modem > Powerline Adaptors > Home Hub 3 > PC but noticed a massive drop in both upload and download speed, and a significantly worse ping.

Routing CAT 6 all around the room is an option but something I'd rather avoid if possible - however I don't see any other solutions - does anybody have any ideas?

Cheers

Why not just buy one more Powerline adapter to plug a switch into for your server/PS3/Xbox?

So just to clarify.

If you are able to get 55 on Infinity 2, you'll also be able to max out if you only have the 40mb service which is much cheaper?

Also AFAIK the only other difference in the deals is the 40gb cap?

Might give BT a ring tomorrow and drop down to the 40mb instead. I can't imagine they can complain since my install date isn't until the 28th.

Question - I currently have the following setup:

Sky Router (WIFI off) > 8-port Gigabit switch > Belkin N1 Vision (WIFI AP only) and all other 6 ports used.

Can I go BT modem straight to the switch? - i have a qnap TS-212 that can issue DHCP if I need - just wondering if the BT modem has a firewall?

That's obviously a Huawei modem. If you've got an ECI version then AFAIK you'd be out of luck.

Just checked today and my exchange is accepting orders - as it was due 30/9/12 it should be a few more weeks before it picks up my phone. I've had a look and i think i've found the cab its around 350 mts from our house. The checker estimates 53Mbps dwn and 15.7 up is that about right? Currently get around 10mb down over adsl2+

Hello everyone, I have a couple of question about Infinity:

1. My exchange should go live on 30th September according the the Flash based BT map, how soon after this can I order? Looking at those BT spreadsheets my postcode was converted months ago.

2. I understand that I'll get a BT VDSL modem, can anyone recommend an ethernet router (with PPOE authentication) that has a reliable wireless schedule function. I dont need anything flash, just 802.11b. I've looked at some Netgears, some dont have the function, where other do, its bugged and doesnt work if you switch off before midnight.

Thanks

30th is just a holding date. It'll probably slip.

Which Netgear routers work with Infinity ? Also i am already having trouble resolving some domain names.

What are the main things i should look at doing now its been running for a week or so?
