BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

So after waiting for months and seeing the cabinets going up, I've just checked the line checker and can order infinity.

You are eligible for superfast BT Infinity. 36.5Mb download
6.1Mb upload Now

ADSL - Between 3.0Mb and 8.0Mb
(Estimated speed: 6.5Mb) Now

Hopefully it will allow my line to be a bit more stable too (but doubt it). Currently peaks up to around 6.1Mbps on speedtests however is stable at around 3Mbps.

I presume since it says I can order, I really can order it, and there is just a delay for updates to samknows and the infinity where and when etc sites.

Well I'll be ordering it tomorrow I suppose.

Switching from sky (ADSL) broadband to BT fibre.
Phone line is apparantly done today - what now?

Do i need to ring them to give a mac code or do I hang fire for them to ring me?

Also anyone know how long it takes once you've got the line sorted for the fibre to be sorted? - looks like my sky internet is still working for now lol

Sent an email to Openreach and got this reply:

Thank you for the information you supplied, as you will appreciate Openreach is rolling out fibre broadband on a strictly commercial basis. When calculating the commercial viability of cabinet areas we take many factors into account. These include ensuring that we locate the cabinets in accordance with all national and local planning laws, ensuring that the cabinet does not obstruct pedestrians or provide a danger to all road-users. We must ensure that the DSLAM (Fibre Cabinet) is located within 100m of its associated telephony connection cabinet and that there is adequate access to power and existing telephony infrastructure. To further enable the location of the DSLAM, we must accurately survey for underground structure and obstacles etc. As such we look at the potential return for our investment over a number of years, (20),with the prospective number of take up of the service being around 20% of households.

Your cabinet (12) has had several possible positions to locate it surveyed, however, the financials were too great to build and maintain this cabinet at this time and as such, this cab has been deferred from the programme. You must understand that this decision was not taken lightly, however, we have made a commitment to our customers, shareholders and the government to roll-out fibre broadband to 66% of the UK by November 2014. This is a complex and long term project with finite timescales and funding, we have to work within this confinement which ultimately means some areas are deferred. However, we do intend to revisit areas not included in the initial rollout for possible deployment at a later date.

Makes me a sad panda. Looks like I'll be cancelling my BT Broadband as soon as I can and moving back to BE then.

BT don't block P2P. They do throttle torrents (with limited success) during peak hours however.

Regarding Sky I've had FTTC for over two years, IDNet and BT Infinity, yet the Sky website says I can't receive FTTC. Either they've made an error their end or my cabinet is full.
