BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Had an odd thing this morning. Yesterday after the install everything was great, no problems at all.

Woke up this morning with no internet.

I rebooted the router to no avail, I did a full power cycle to no avail.

I tried pinging a few websites and some (amazon.co.uk, google.co.uk) worked while thoers (amazon.com) didn't.

The only thing remaining was to power cycle the modem and sure enough it all came back on.

Throughout all this the HH3 was saying it was connected to the internet just fine.

EDIT: Needed to be done again this evening. That 2750n is looking more tempting by the minute.

I went onto http://fttc-check.alc.im to check out some information, but FTTC and what not isn't my speciality, I'm more into the coding development background, so if someone could help me with this, it would be great.

Here's what was said:

So what I would like to know is, in basic/lament terms, what does this mean? is it due to be upgraded for Dec '12? what is the probability of that? etc, etc.

Bt Wholesale checker changed today for me....

BUT no longer does it have a holding date of the 30th Sep nor has it rolled to the 30th Dec it now just no information about Fibre at all..

gutted :(

Got BT coming to install infinity Wednesday but I'm just wondering if they have some sort of long cable for the modem to the socket? As my socket is downstairs by the front door but I have the cable running upstairs to the modem. Are they able to run it round the wall if so? Or do they leave it loose?

They can install a data extension kit - which is essentially a Cat5 cable with a few less wires in it to make it thinner. This is what the engineer did for my install. Just ask him to install it when he comes

December is a holding date. Does your local cab have an FTTC twin?

See if the wholesale checker says anything about FTTC. https://www.btwholesale.com/pages/s...unity/Coverage/ADSL_Availibility_Checker.html

Says the following:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial check on your postcode indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 1.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1Mbps and 2.5Mbps.

Our check also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 2Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 1Mbps and 3.5Mbps.

Although this wouldn't display anything about the FTTC would it? considering it's only ADSL etc?

It does display FTTC information if you're in an enabled area.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 3.5Mbps and 7.5Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 6Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 4Mbps and 8Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1Mbps and downstream line speed of 6Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 4Mbps and 8Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 80Mbps and upstream line speed of 20Mbps.

Excellent, thanks. Do they leave it lose or pin it around the wall?

So numerous checkers said I had a 30th Sept fibre date, thought this may be a holding date but the new boxes have gone in at the end of the road. Now all sites have removed any data about fibre being installed and the only place mentioning about an estimated date (talktalk) have pushed back to January!

That's sounds fine. It often takes another 3 months or so after the cabinets have been installed.

engineer is coming around tomorrow, coming from a 3mb capped connection and in all honesty i feel like a kid on christmas eve. should get the full 75mb as well!

It does display FTTC information if you're in an enabled area.

EDIT:

I went back and did the same test, but I did it using the address checker this time and this appeared.

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st December 2012. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 73 Mbps and upstream line speed of 20 Mbps.

I'd be the same to be honest! I can't wait until it's available back home, we're getting Infinity 80/20 here at Uni next .. Monday! I cannot wait. This current connection is so unstable it's unreal, going to be jumping from 10/1 to the 80/20 I cannot wait!

Something weird is going on with the BT wholesale checker..

Yesterday when I checked my postcode they removed any info about Fibre.. i thought ok maybe its because plans for my cab to upgraded where put on hold..

Strange thing I i just checked the postcode of house down a road I know have fibre and have the green cab in plain site with Fibre here sticker on it and none of those house come up with Fibre information on the checker.

Interesting last few posts...

For months its said 30th September FTTC available.

Got to today, and its now 31st December FTTC available. Weird thing is, all the cabinets around my area have been done bar the one at the end of our road... have they just decided to stop in my area or something !?
