BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I do feel your pain, I didn't get broadband until 2005 and when I did it maxed out at 4mb. It's just by chance I moved to a FTTP area in York. It's pointlessly fast now, I was going to downgrade to option 1 as there isn't much on the internet that can use this sort of speed.

How much does that FTTP product cost you a month? What are the price differences, speeds, d/l caps (if any), etc?

Not that the information is of any use to me, just curious!

It's something like £52 a month with BT vision. I've been on 100mb for a while and never seen the speed drop below that figure, it looks like they have just uncapped it with the 160mb upgrade. I downloaded a lot in the first few months and didn't hear a thing so it has been unlimited for me.

I saw a lot of traffic shaping (p2p & bit torrent) when I first got the service but nothing in the last couple of months on both the 100mb option 3 and the 160mb one.

It's the BT Infinity 160Mb package, details are on the BT website. No download limits, some speed "management" on P2P, evening and weekend calls, £35 a month + line rental (£10-ish).

I'm inclined to agree with Dovey that these speeds are faster than most people can really make good use of at the moment. It's fun to download a 1GB file in a minute or two, but if a lower speed could still give me seamless HD streaming from Netflix and the like, I'd definitely consider downgrading.

For the 2 guys above on the FTTP product with 260-280Mb+ speeds; you make me cry! We don't even have any dates for FTTx anything!!

Still sat on 4Mb ADSL2+ with Sky's LLU... :(

No VM/cable available either..

When I moved away from home I was looking forward to getting something faster than the 5mb BT ADSL My parents had...

But I've ended up with 1.5mb Sky LLU :(

Rule one. When looking for a new home ALWAYS check the internet access speeds :D

im a bit of a networking newbie and i have ambitious plans which i fear is a bad combination, im looking to get a NAS in the near future and i have BT infinity 2.

now for the silly question, if i buy a RT-N66U will it replace the HH3 and the little white mystery box that came with it? and how much config will be required so BT dont suspect a thing?

I wouldn't recommend getting a "all-in-one" product just yet, noticed a number of sites saying people are having problems with these products.

Got myself an RT-N66U and simply plugged it into the BT supplied 'white box'. Never bothered to connect the HH3 which it replaced and after setting it to PPoE (easy enough to setup during initial connection) - its been working a treat ;)

I have a Draytek 2750n & I have had a few issues with it, mainly due the quality of the line, I suspect, as the SNR fluctuates between 38 to 62.
The 2750n came with firmware 1.5.1, had numerous dropped connections, but since updating firmware to 1.5.2 RC1, it's been rock solid, & it syncs a bit higher now.

But, seriously considering changing to a RT-N66U in the next few monthly.

Remember a few posts back i had posted that the nga email address had told me the 17th october for my cab activation, well it was no surprise that it didnt happen and the date moved to 31st December. Now this morning it had been put out to March 2013. A new cab was fitted about 6 months ago

Openreach truly are a scummy mob and there is obviously no idea what is going on out in the field, as i said waste of time

Exactly the symptoms I had with mine, even on 1.5.2x. Maybe use the BT box for a while and monitor the stats?

Been using BT box, & SNR is still up & down, me thinks it's a **** line, aluminum in sections, so I have got Ofcom involved, as there is a pole in rear garden I could use, so closer to same cabinet.
BT has capped my line, just to give me a stable connection, but they will NOT move me to other pole.:mad:

Damn you Open Reach. Just looked at the http://www.dslchecker.bt.com and i've been bumped from 31st Dec 2012 by 6 months..wtf

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 30th June 2013. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 53Mbps and upstream line speed of 15.7Mbps.
