BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Yeah i have been keeping a eye on it and it seems all the work has been done. the exchange is taking orders just not my postcode, i am hoping coming out of the weekend they update my postcode zone!

Thanks!
What's the speed like on them? Do you cap your infinity speed?

The UK server gives me 20Mb/s down, 10Mb/s up. US server ain't so great, 5Mb/s down. UK server latency is usually under 20ms. Give the free 1GB trial a go.

I tried it and it didn't allow me to download the maximum speed from my 76mbit line so I found another one, still early to tell but so far so good!
they are called "Private Internet Access" downloading at 7.4mb/s a now!
This is why I like Sky fibre but only BT infinity is available at this time.
Thanks for your help

Interesting, seems quite cheap too (about £25 for a whole year? am I right?)

You using it on p2p? what's upload like?

For some reason even on regular non traffic shaped BT my upload doesn't work, same with the VPN.
Just got infinity installed yesterday so unsure if its that or there is something else.
I'm connected to the modem from a DD-WRT router and not HomeHub3 all ports are open but upload is nonexistence, at some point i had it to 400kb/s other than that it's stay 0 most of the time.

The VPN is great otherwise but still need at least a month with them to tell, but I also got it on my phone now as they allow 2 clients per VPN account.
A big plus is I can watch american stuff now such as HULU etc.
Yeah it's fairly cheap if you buy for a whole year but I wouldn't do it until I'm 100% certain it works for you.

I've used StrongVPN before, they maxed my infinity line and are $55 a year for unlimited data, with servers in the UK, USA, Canada and Netherlands. If i recall you can swap servers up to 15 times a month with them.

55$ deal is PPTP only. :S

I know the quoted speeds are not a guarantee when you order FTTC but we got quoted 66MB down and 19MB up, after an initial problem with our line profile being set to 40/2 it is now on 80/20 and we're exceeding our download speed estimate and getting 72MB down which is great, but only getting 8MB up. It was the upload we really wanted to get the most out of!

I know its very much an 'up to' service but is it just something i'll have to suck up with regards the upload or is there anyway this can be 'tuned' so to speak so we get nearer the quoted figure?

Is this the Zen line?

You should be able to see the stats in the customer area.

Yes it is.

I've done speed checks and we get about 74MB down, and 8MB up. We were quoted 66MB down and 19MB up.

I've just checked our line stats on our Zen account and the upstream says 20000, the downstream says 77436 and the sync says 80000, interleave says auto.

We most certainly aren't getting anywhere near 20MB upload!

Roll on the 5th of Feb... Infinity Option 2...

As I'm currently on Total Broadband Option 1 (10Gb Download MAX) and I've already gone over my usage limit for the month!!

Working From Home, iPlayer, Downloading on 6 different devices and Browsing t'interweb it all stacks up!! :(

Chances of me get Infinity2 in my house in Chatteris, zero I think:-

We cannot state at this time when or even if the cabinet, (DSLAM), will be brought back into the program. This is a process which takes quite some time as there are several areas which need to be explored.

When deploying cabinets, we must inform the local planning and highways authorities of our intention to site a cabinet. This is performed by send a noticing of intent to the council. (This is not part of the normal planning application process).
When planning our deployment, we must ensure that the DSLAM cabinet is located within 100m of its associated telephony connection cabinet and that there is adequate access to power and existing telephony infrastructure. Also, ensuring that the cabinet does not obstruct pedestrians, or provide a danger to road-users. To further enable the location of the DSLAM, we must accurately survey for other utility underground structure and obstacles. Our request to site the DSLAM was rejected on three separate attempts as the location is deemed a conservation area. We couldn’t find another site which falls within our deployment criteria stated above.

We do not currently have plans for FTTP at Chatteris at present, however, a new product is to be made available shortly called Fibre on Demand, which will deliver FTTP to premise, but only in FTTC enabled cabinet areas. It will also be subject to an on-site survey.

the fact my cabinet was in a conservation area seemed to put the knickers on it.

Looking at the figures, it looks more like a throughput issue, rather than a maximum sync issue. In other words, it's 20Mbit/s between the modem and the DSLAM, but through Zen's network is a different matter. Could it be that Zen throttles uploads?

Im not too sure really, is this common practice?
Its a business FTTC service so if they're advertising up to 19MB upload on it then surely people should be capable of receiving it.

Does FTTC have a learning period like ADSL? Could the upload speed increase over the next week or so?
