BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Interested to hear more about this. Although I've long since moved out, when I lived with my dad I had one of the oldschool engineer adsl installs which ran a socket into my old bedroom. Does that mean it is suitable for FTTC? His exchange has recently been enabled, and I know this sounds stupid to most people, but one of his concerns about switching to fibre is how much upheaval having an engineer round to do work would cause (if they can just plug it in where the current adsl extension resides, that would be ideal)

Cant comment specifically on your dad.

But one of the guys hadn't seen my setup install (must have been new) but, the other guy was yea can just use your existing setup no need to put a new filtered faceplate on as its basically what I already got.

So essentially all they did was do the work on cabinet and then plugged the bt open reach modem into the adsl port (rj11) that moments before had been plugged into the sky adsl router. Did not need any new cables (other than one going from bt open reach modem to the new router.)

I'm at the end of long stretch of very old copper so FTTC speed for me top out at 20mbps ish. Fortunately I'm in a VM area so I can get >100mb but would like to change. Seems the only realistic option for me will be FTTP - any concrete news on when it might be generally available in terms of areas?

Doh, just seen the post a couple up from here :)

Bad news I guess for those of us with fibre enabled exchanges but with cabinets that won't be upgraded. Just seems to be one kick in the teeth after another:

-BT rolls out 21CN (ADSL2+)! Great, I'll be having some of that.... Sorry, no plans to upgrade your exchange.
-Exchange is FTTC enabled! Great, I'll be having some of that.... Sorry, we aren't going to upgrade your cab, you can't have it.
-BT announces FTTPoD! Awesome, happy to fork out for a decent connection, money isn't a problem.... Sorry, we are only going to allow you to order this if your cab is enabled for FTTC.
-Oh well, hopefully one day I'll be able to order FTTP, few grand, job done! Sorry, we're scaling back that rollout.

@HangTime BDUK funding might help you. http://www3.hants.gov.uk/broadband.htm

Thanks but I've already looked there and it doesn't let me register because it claims we're already covered (not according to BTOR when I contacted them - they said my cab wasn't commercially viable):

Already available/covered by commercial upgrades
You are in an area which already receives superfast broadband through the commercial market or where there are plans to provide it before 2015. For this reason, you do not need to register with the faster broadband campaign.

The Hampshire Broadband Programme is not able to tell you when you are likely to be upgraded, as commercial suppliers only announce this information a few months before the upgrade is due to take place.

We will refresh our postcode checker as this information becomes available to us, so please keep returning to our website.

Speeds currently available in your area
Superfast Broadband
Type: BT FTTC xDSL
Up to 8Mbps basic broadband
Type: BT xDSL
The maximum speed your line can support is 6.5Mbps.

Yeah, BT FTTC xDSL is currently available in my 'area', that doesn't mean they are letting me have it!

my home hub died today and eventually got BT to send out a replacement. The Support people obviously have a script and dont deviate from it. They insisted on checking the line despite the fact the HH was only flashing the power light and I could not ping it or get to the web page. Once the 1st line guy had done this a 2nd tech called back and insisted on doing it all again but told them to stop wasting time as its not a line problem.
Anyway, new HH on way and now using the hacked firmware im able to connect my switch to the white modem and get wired internet access.

in fairness they were pretty good but not used to having a customer who is a network engineer so techie vs techie is never good.

Haha same thing happened here. They don't feel easy working in a home with a customer who knows exactly what they're meant to be doing.. Almost like they stay on their toes and not slack off like they would normally do. Not that it helped me in the long run, to say I'm unhappy with this product and the huge amount I'm paying for it is understatement of the century. Pants.

10 days is now over!!

The final result:

Not bad at all :)

techie vs techie is never good.

A lot better than techie vs foreign idiot* reading from a script with no authority/access to actually fix the problem - at least a techie has a chance of understanding what the problem is!

*Possibly not an idiot but likely not trained in technical issues and used to used to dealing with trivial/common problems.

I was told it would take 10 days for the line to settle, in truth it took around 4-5 days. It started around 30-40mb occasionally spiking up to 70, its now 'official' in my eyes at least anyhow :p
