BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Outside McDonalds on Trafalgar street.

Cheers Griff,

I had a suspicion it was that one, which has in fact already been upgraded, although no ISP claims that I can get fibre as of yet.

I guess the next question is:

Is it possible on Sky to upgrade from "standard" broadband to fibre without being tied in for another 12 months? I think I'm currently tied in for 7 months. The reason I ask is that my house may be going on the market very soon.

Cheers.

Just renewed without HH5: £22.65 x 12 = £141 line saver rental = £412.80 = £34.40/month

They werent willing to budge at all :/ however did say they would pass my query onto a manager who would contact me within the next week but not expecting them to considering this is the 4th time.

Either way their internet seems reliable enough at a fair price.

Edit I did esquire about the 40/10 but it was £21 rofl (£1 cheaper rofl)

Fair enough :)

Since I don't use P2P at home, I cancelled my BT Infinity 2. Waiting for them to email me my MAC code, and then I'll sign up with PlusNet.

From everything I've read, I am probably not going to notice any difference being on PlusNet compared to BT, apart from the extra money in my pocket ;)

A new 12 month contract is required.

You're welcome mate.

New 12 month contract afaik.

I am moving to a new house and ordered infinity did originally have a date of 2nd jan and they have know out it back twice and it's now 16th this is the engineer visit now apparently it's out back as they need to do external engineering work open reach need to complete just hope I still get it anyone experienced this before ?

Good Evening,

I need some advice on my situation. I am in my last month with BT (infinity 2) and only get 38/8. Initially I was getting 45/12 but over the course of the 18 month contract it has settled at 38/8. I have been told by BT engineers that I have poor cabling along the road somewhere hence why speeds are so low (friends who work for openreach, who have spent nearly a day checking the duct cabelling from manhole to manhole). So I accepted it as it was still miles better than my previous adsl2 4mbits download speed.

I have recently started checking online line speed checkers offered by zen, plusnet etc.. all say I should get 54/14. Should I assume 38/8 is the realistic figure I will get no matter what isp I go with ? and should I opt for a 38/10 package over a 76/20 with whichever isp ? this in theory should allow me to reach close to top speeds for what I will be paying for ?

Now here is the strange bit which I haven't been able to figure out. If I use a vpn service on my existing setup and do a speedtest I get 48/10 ! more bandwidth for downloading but latency is higher 75ms ping compared to 15ms pings without vpn. Is the 38/8 due to crappy BT routing ?

Thanks.

Sometimes you will have to select the 80/20 package in order to get unlimited bandwidth.

Run the BT speed test. http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
Click 'Further diagnostics' at the end of the test to get the IP profile information.

I have the Home Hub 3, and despite what people may say about it, it has performed flawlessly for me. It's basic and the user interface is annoying at times, but it has never let me down.

I would like the Home Hub 5 for 2 reasons:

* Gigabit ethernet ports. Copying to my HTPC at 11.2MB/sec with the HH3 is doing my head in.
* A single device, ie. no modem needed.

I think I'm going to renew with BT and get the HH5. I hate to say it, but they are the best ISP for FTTC.

I upgraded my HH3 this week to a HH5. I like the fact it's all in one (no separate modem) and the wireless feels better. I bought it for £45.

Thanks mate :) I bought one from the Members Market for £45 too.

I can't wait to have gigabit throughput on every port. It's incredible just how rubbish 100mbit/sec is these days.

Grrr. Moving into a new build at the end of the month. The house builders have confirmed Openreach have been in and fitted fibre. Openreach's postcode checker confirms Infinity is available. House number and postcode says it isn't...

Not sure if I'm best waiting or buying 8mb broadband with Plus.net and then upgrade when fibre is released. Not sure if they'd do it without implications though. Any suggestions?
