BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Need a favour from BT Infinity and/or Plusnet fiber users: what's your viewing experience like on twitch.tv? How much buffering/lag do you get?

If you've never used it, you'd be doing me a favour if you could just go there and watch some livestreams and on high/source quality and see if they lag.

I wonder if Plusnet's "pro" add-on would make a difference for watching on twitch.

Up until recently, I could only view Twitch medium quality (BT Infinity). I've been able to view source quality since awesome games done quick started. http://gamesdonequick.com/

Watched a bit of AGDQ at a mate's over the weekend (He's on Infinity1 I believe). Was watching it on Source and don't recall it buffering once. Got home and watched the same stream on my 13/1 ADSL, again on Source, and it was equally as smooth.

I watch quite a lot on twitch with hardly any problems. Don't see why fibre would struggle.

It's a routing issue. A lot of ISPs all across europe have terrible buffering issues with twitch, my one (bethere/bought by sky so sky soon I guess) included. I have the bandwidth to watch the streams, I just get horrible routing issues. Bethere blames twitch and twitch blames bethere.

Fortunately my cabinet got enabled for FTTC today so I'm switching to either Plusnet or BT Infinity. Probably Plusnet. I was considering Sky too since they tried to convince me to stay when I phoned them for my MAC - they actually offered me a good deal, the same price as the Plusnet package I was considering. But after some googling I found that my exchange is affected by the Sky congestion and after I told the guy that he conceded and gave me my MAC. :p

Ah I see. Only ever read good things about BE when I was looking for an ISP a couple of years back. Might have got it myself but it wasn't available around here at the time.

Cheers for the info, hope your switch goes well. Fibre's due to go live here within a few months. Luckily I live in an area which shouldn't be too congested, but I'll do some digging just incase.

EDIT: That tag in your username, it's not Halo related is it? Haven't seen it in years.

Same happened to me, my cabinet was reporting May 2014, its now available, and ordered :), install on 23rd Jan.

For info, Sky offering fibre for my cabinet too, I always wondered if BT kinda got in first so to speak but it seems not. Despite having signed up for email alerts for fibre availability I still have none .

Order placed. Install date 28th.

Will I have to use the Homehub? I have a rather nice Apple Airport Extreme that I'm more than happy with - the last HH I used left a very bad taste.

Can I just buy a separate modem that will work with Infinity?

It was working fine till around xmas time, I think it's a routing issue to the EA servers as my other games work fine and other people aren't getting the lag I am.

Well admittedly I'm no internet expert but I'd start by tracerouting back to the EA server and looking to see where the packets begin to pick up the most latency.

Once you have that, you can start either harassing BT to fix it or crossing your fingers and hoping EA sort out their servers. :)

[Edit] It looks to me like easo.ea.com for the servers from a quick google.

Ask for a modem from the Openreach guy when he comes. They are on the vans and allocated to jobs but don't get used when there's a HH5 present.

Yes it is :o

H2F was halo2forum (then halo3forum, now thehaloforum). If you've ever been there you've probably seen me.

Had a feeling that's what it was :p. Browsed the forum a bit back in the day but I was mostly on the EU site.

Pretty much stopped once Reach came out though.

Your fibre order is now committed for 29/01/2014 between 8am to 1pm.

yay :D

Estimated download speed: 23.7 Mbps
Estimated upload speed: 6.1 Mbps

boo :(

Oh well. At least I'm getting away from Sky. It's weird how I had max ADSL2+ speed (23 down 2.1 up) but my fiber speed is so terrible.

Cabinet must be near as damnit right outside the exchange.

VDSL 2 in the UK has a poorer range than ADSL 2+ due to need for extra power masking to avoid drowning out long ADSL lines.

Hopefully you'll get a better speed than the estimate suggests.

Dagnamitt BT

Just about everyone on my street can get fibre but my postcode and house number still show up as no-go!!!!

Then BT send me a flyer saying, congrats, you can get fibre so I call the number up and, yep, you guessed it - computer says no!!!!

I'm convinced that it's because I'm connected to a metal telephone pole outside next door's house whereas next door's phone wire actually crosses mine and is attached to a wooden pole up the street!?!?!?

If the numpty that connected me up had just chosen the other pole I'd be enjoying the speedy goodness of fibre optic but as it stands all BT tell me is that I have to wait!!!!! God forbid they send an engineer out and connect me to the other pole!!!!!

At the very least, STOP SENDING ME FLYERS SAYING I CAN GET A SERVICE THAT I ACTUALLY CAN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

/rant over

well it was coming to my area 2 years ago now. every now and then i go to the website and it gets pushed back and then pushed back. the other side of the street has infinity!!!!!

Hi guys. Is there a site that gives any specific dates as to when I will be able to get Fire at my house?

I do a quick check and it shows that some parts of my village have it already. My street doesn't currently.

Thanks
