BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

BT did my installation yesterday and i'm not that impressed so far to be honest. My connection stats in the HH5 are great;

VDSL Line Status
Connection Information
Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 days, 20:59:09
Downstream: 78.12 Mbps
Upstream: 19.53 Mbps

However this is the best speedtest I have managed so far;

I am connected on wireless ac at 866.5 mbps so I can't see that being the issue. I will try gig ethernet if I can find a cable that will stretch, however it's looking like my area is oversubcribed :(

Just stretched the HH to the middle of the room and plugged in an ethernet cable and got;

Looks like wireless ac isn't up to the task.... That said having the whole setup stuck in the middle of my living room isn't much of a solution...

Strange, whats your local environment like in terms of wireless? I can pull over 130mbps on standard wireless n (300mbps link speed). I'd have thought .ac to easily do that if you were in any reasonable range and environment. Mind you I'm not going a great deal of distance but mine does travel from the front of the bottom floor to the back of the top floor in a standard semi.

I've done a bit of testing.

Over gig-e i'm getting 74 down 18.5 up without problem and I am getting about the same with my 200 meg homeplugs.

I have tried my old Netgear 150meg wireless n adapter and that gets 60 down 18 up, however the BT ac dongle struggles to break 40 down and 10 up.

Have tried my Nexus 5 and on 5ghz wireless n it gets 55 down 18 up and on 5ghz ac it gets 72 down and 18 up so it seems the Home Hub is fine.

There are lots of 2.4Ghz networks as you would expect however my 5Ghz network is the only one in range. My PC is around 4-5m away from the HH with nothing blocking line of sight.

It seems either the ac dongle is faulty or I have some kind of compatibility issue.

Has anybody else had a similar problem to this?

Every now and again my wired connections will just drop out randomly, bizarrely the wireless connections seem fine whilst this happens.

The light on front of the HH5 will be a solid/flashing orange.

So far this has only happened whilst playing BF4 on the PS4, not entirely sure if it affects other games/consoles.

What are BT like with replacing hubs?? out of contract so if i upgrade to the 80b for free will they upgrade my HH ?

having a few drop outs with the old HH3 i have. Starting to get annoying with dropped packets affecting games

My Infinity installation has been delayed since the 22nd of April, two engineers came out and couldn't access the DP to reconnect the landline because of tree branches. So I was on hold while they got consent from the owners to fell the tree.

Yesterday outof the blue a 3rd engineer came out, no previous notes for the visit just a report of a faulty line. Low and behold he fires up the pole not phased by the branches and connects the line up. Whilst I was happy with the line being connected I'm left wondering why the previous two engineers couldn't have done that in the first place.:mad:

So now I have to contact BT to escalate my Infinity install.Hopefully I'll get connected this week.

Oh FFS!!!!

After nearly a week of an unstable connection, 2-3 drops a day, yesterday was particularly bad with getting on for 12 drops, the inevitable has happened, the DLM software has kicked in overnight and lowered my speed.:(

20% drop in download, 40% drop in upload and ping times have doubled...:mad:

I go through this once or twice a year and assuming the line remains stable and doesn't drop in speed any further, it's going to take 3-4 weeks for the DLM to raise the line speed back up, and not the 3-7 days the idiots at tech support says.

If only I could be sure that Virgin Media wouldn't be any worse (for different reasons) I'd go with them in a heartbeat and have a nice 150Mbit connection and not have to worry about bad weather screwing up my connection because of overhead phone lines being in such crap condition near my house.

As it is, I'm stuck with the certain knowledge that it's only a matter of time until my connection turns to crap every now and then.

@Cooper Why don't you try VM cable?

AFAIK there's a cooling off period.

I was with Virgin years ago, and the local UBR was nearly always oversubscribed, giving terrible speeds, I mean, dial-up standard some nights.

Whichever way I go, I have to put up with a crappy connection for one reason or another.

Maybe they've installed new capacity since then, I don't know,..the problem is that the connection could be fine for a month or so, then it turns to crap and will take them 3mths (or longer) to increase capacity at the UBR...believe me, I've been there and the thought of being with them for 18mths is pretty appalling.

As it is, FTTC is the least worst option...:(

Its fairly normal - I've got one of those "upto 900MBit wifi" routers and a mix of wireless adaptors from old 54Mbit/s to the latest and greatest and in terms of real sustained speeds none of them manage more than about 60Mbit/s tops and most either max out at 20 or 40mbit/s.

Which is not often I presume? My equipment never gets switched off...

Assuming your line is stable and not getting many DC's/Restarts, then it should be going for a good long while. Read posts of a good few weeks of VDSL up time (and hence same IP) at the very least from others. My own is nearing a week now (only got it about a week ago).

But if your line is super unstable, that will just keep bouncing your IP around as it reconnects to the network. (Usually NSR or Noise Margin is really low, normally less than 6.0 results in the disconnections)

anyone had any dealing with renewing contracts?

im due for renewal soon, the renewal i got was £26 a month for 12 months keeping my poop hub(40mb package)

the deal for new customers is £20 a month for 3 months, £26 a month after on an 18 month deal + Home Hub 5 + a £50 sainsburys card.

i rang and asked and they said that the deal was for new customers only and if i cancelled and signed up again i wouldnt count as a new customer.

You could switch to Plusnet and claim cashback.
