BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

So I've noticed a new green powered cabinet next to my old exisiting cab and Openreach were feeding fibre through over the road the other day.

How soon do you think it would go live?

To answer my own question, the installation is booked for next Wednesday so around 5-6 weeks in my case.

It's already live if you can place an order.

Talk talk get a bad rep but that's who I will be going with

Here are my old and new stats based on BT info
wQT8BA8l.jpg

my Noise Margins seem to float round above 6 and below 6

modem seems to re-negotiate backwards and forwards from 45 down to 40.5 all the time - I'd rather it keep a lower speed and perhaps just re-test once every few weeks

5. VDSL uptime: 0 days, 00:23:59
6. Data rate: 11760 / 43843
7. Maximum data rate: 11789 / 50692
8. Noise margin: 6.3 / 6.0
9. Line attenuation: 0.0 / 21.5
10. Signal attenuation: 0.0 / 20.7

Those stats are very similar to mine, so your line must be same quality/distance to the cabinet.

You look like you're on Infinity 2. I'd personally drop to Infinity 1 (I did). You'll find the VDSL uptime more stable and lower pings with very little difference in noticeable speed. My line was forever being interleaved.

You could also try buying an Openreach modem from an auction site and using the HH5 as a router only. Doesn't have to be unlocked. I found the line a lot more stable after doing this.

Only from people who dont know what they are talking about. TalkTalk have pretty terrible customer service to rival companies' like BT for awfulness, but their network is as good as any.:)

Mine gives less information now. It used to say they are having a problem with my cabinet but now just says superfast is in my area but they can't tell by my postcode if i can get it or not :p

Kind of what I thought.

On the bandwagon

Lol - Mine has gone from AO (accepting orders - which no-one was) to EA (Enabled Area) - Your area is enabled for Superfast Fibre but your cabinet is not ready yet so you can’t place an order today

Going backwards!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

What?? No it isn't..

Hopefully it's all true and the engineer comes on 1st September

The potential to get a 30x speed boost is mouth watering

HH5 and other kit should arrive by post on Monday. Just to check, I don't have to be in to sign for it, do I? Most of my mail and parcels get left out in the main porch unless there's a signature needed.

BT website seems to suggest that I don't need to be in but thought I should check here just in case. Don't want the engineer turning up on Wednesday with nothing to connect

No. It will fit through most letter boxes.

Don't have a letterbox. I live in a building of 6 flats, with a porch area by the main front door where everyone's mail is usually left. I don't have a problem with it being left there, just wondering if Mr Postie will.

I seem to have the ubiquitous "my neighbours can get fibre but I can't" problem :(

Now is this situation below even possible?

I live on an estate where the houses are in blocks of 32 (old RAF estate). We have no overhead phone lines, the BT cable runs along the front of the terrace houses to a DP on my neighbours house, then goes into underground trunking off to a cabinet.

Now it seems everyone on my block is on cabinet 1, but my records show I'm on cabinet 8

I chatted to an Openreach engineer recently who said he thought all my side of the estate was on Cabinet 1, he got his laptop out and we couldn't even find cabinet 8 on his maps.

So, since I can physically see my phone cable running along all the houses on my side of the block to the same DP then going into the same underground trunking as everyone elses, is it even possible that my line is wired to a separate cabinet....that is god knows where?

That's the one that says I'm on cabinet 8

I just can't see how I am connected to a different cabinet when all the infrastructure would have been in place (ie underground trunking) before the houses were built.

I've been arguing with Plusnet that it doesn't seem right, but they just look at that adsl checker and say "you're on cabinet 8"

When I pointed out that cabinet 8 speeds are stated as 1-3mbs and I'm already on ~14mbs (further ammunition that maybe I'm not on cabinet 8 after all) they just said the details probably hadn't been updated on the website for No.8...

I can't win :p

How do I find out for sure?

I went with talk talk 36mb

Can't see me needing the 76mb offering

No more limiting steam to 128KBps
No more having to pick and choose which games to install first as tomb raider 2 bought in the sale and still not done
No more having to disable steam auto update otherwise a game update means no playing tonight
No more having to ration my usage between 4 pcs
No more waiting days for a video
No more having to dejected 360p or waiting for buffering on YouTube

Just ordered BT up to 74Mb.

Installation date: Friday 29th!

3 WEEKS!

I actually just cancelled my BT order. Went on the Sky (current broadband provider) online chat to cancel broadband following placing an infinity order. The rep begged me to stay with them and offered me the fibre pro unlimted package for £20 a month for 12 months on a 12 month contract. Also free line rental for 12 months! So ended up staying put.
