BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

That's the one that says I'm on cabinet 8

I just can't see how I am connected to a different cabinet when all the infrastructure would have been in place (ie underground trunking) before the houses were built.

I've been arguing with Plusnet that it doesn't seem right, but they just look at that adsl checker and say "you're on cabinet 8"

When I pointed out that cabinet 8 speeds are stated as 1-3mbs and I'm already on ~14mbs (further ammunition that maybe I'm not on cabinet 8 after all) they just said the details probably hadn't been updated on the website for No.8...

I can't win :p

How do I find out for sure?

What does the address checker say?

I actually just cancelled my BT order. Went on the Sky (current broadband provider) online chat to cancel broadband following placing an infinity order. The rep begged me to stay with them and offered me the fibre pro unlimted package for £20 a month for 12 months on a 12 month contract. Also free line rental for 12 months! So ended up staying put.

Very nice offer.

Yep. Too good to resist so practically bit his hand off! Haha

What was strange though was BT said activation date would be 29th. Sky said it will be active in 6 working days?

BT Retail 80/20 requires an engineer to visit. Sky use self-install.

Kelly Communications do a lot and I've also had a couple of guys from facilities management companies but I'm damned if I can remember the name (it's a well known one). One of the guys from the FM company had a had written tatty sheet of A4 notes to guide him through.

Pray you get an actual Openreach engineer.

Not many.

If there's a fault, only Openreach can fix it.

Openreach actually know what they're doing.

Openreach actually give a crap about what they're doing.

Oh my sides!! Please stop!

The target will be gradually introduced over three years, Ofcom said.

For a company with such a terrible reputation, improvement should be easy. In our case it was 3 months before they managed to install a phone line. They cut off half our neighbours in the process. Meanwhile at work they have consistently failed to provide a working broadband connection over the past 9 months.

You only usually get one after you've went through months of sheer frustration. Usually followed by 11 - 14 Openreach call outs at a time. Then they change their 3 strike policy to go under a new fault but are very quick to mark up the fault as sorted even though it has not been.

Out of the past decade, I've only experienced 4 people from BT Openreach who really knew what they were doing. Out of the hundreds thats been sent.

I had a Kellys communication guy do mine.

He messed up wiring in my extention bell (didn't ring), I had to do that my self after he left (he stamped it into the wrong terminals on the removable plate.

The actual internet install was fine, but all he had to do was changed my master socket from the old type (no test socket), to the nte5 with vdsl faceplate. So I guess there wasn't too much they could mess up.

For what its worth BT do now have a long term strategy to move away from hired contractors and keep it in house, probably because Kelly's et all have absolutely rinsed their reputation.

Realise that doesn't help anyone currently dealing with Openreach, but its a start.

Dunno if it's true of just excuses, but according to the guy who done mine, they have to hit targets of X amount a day, so have to rush. Where as the openreach people can take as long as they like.

Could just be an excuse though.

I doubt it.

The Openreach engineers are trained to repair lines, install lines, etc. whereas the contractors literally are told how to change a master socket and move some wires - you could do that to be honest.

Well got mine ordered. Install date of 29/08 Cabinet installed Mid-end of June (originally was mean't to go in Nov but held up to due "unforeseen circumstances" x3).

Only going for 40/20 (I could get estimated 80/20 on highs and 72/62 on lows) from Plusnet as I be moving Feb March time not too fused yet.

Just need to decide on router.... Not fused about wireless speeds (G is fine) gigabit ethernet and very reliable.
