BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

My first experience with BT internet has been very trying. We had three missed engineer appointments(or rather they didn't show up), and the one that finally did come see us, had to leave because they sent him to the wrong cabinet.

However after some of my own research, I feel I now know why that happened. When I search my phone number and /or house number, it shows me at a different cabinet to all my neighbours. The cabinet BT says I'm on, gives me practically full whack of potential speeds. Furthermore after scouring over Googlemaps, I managed to see a business and a few homes up the road that share my cabinet number. However they are at least one mile from my residence and from what I can gather, they are about 200m or less from the cabinet.

Openreach has since sent someone else who identified us on a different cabinet(much closer than the one BT shows me on) and when I check my neighbours address, they too are on this cabinet.
Unfortunately the cabinet my neighbours on, gives them half what Infinity 2 is capable of, and we're all only 400 meters or so from the cabinet.

Also, SamKnows says that my exchange is not FTTC enabled!

How would this happen?

EDIT 1: While it doesn't answer my query, it is helpful and interesting regarding BT's new BETA website for availability.

Hi all,

My father has infinity installed at his house and is currently using BT hub3+bt openreach router/infinity. (BT Sport sub and renew back in 2012)

however to reach the TV down stairs they supplied (Simpler Networks) 200mbps Powerline adapters

Which then the vision box is connected via Ethernet each end and gets 100mbps.

He gets a Error: VMC999

Any idea if i get better powerline adapters ...500mbps it would be better?

Just wondering if its worth pestering BT to try and get a Hub5? :) (FREE)

oh and also on Unlimited Broadband with BT Infinity 2 - But only get 25mbps

Fast Ethernet (100mbps/200mbps/500mbps) is enough if you're talking to the outside world ; meaning you should get the full Infinity internet speeds on all devices when they aren't sharing it. If however you are sharing the connection across multiple devices, then there may come a time when the backbone of the powerline adapters is not sufficient enough. They now make 'Gigabit' powerline. The rated speeds are roughly 600mbps, but the key is it's stronger backbone which gives all devices Gigabit connections.

If you're only getting 25mbps, then it could be down to the distance to your cabinet, and/or a fault on the line.

You should see if BT will let you temporarily drop down to Infinity 1 and test your speed.

the connection is being used by:

3 mobile phones (wifi)
vision box (powerline)

Will be adding:
2pc's (wifi)
xbox (ethernet)
blu-ray (netflix) (ethernet)

You are approximately 1.60km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

I would question that with BT as that seems considerably high for 1.6km. It's fairly common that once you past 500 meters, downstream is cut in half - and that's with a straight line.

As for your listed devices, yes, I'd invest in some Gigabit powerlines. Make sure they say Gigabit - should be at least 600mpbs throughput.

Fibre has now been installed all around the village. Have my order placed for FTTP on 01/10. Gone for Infinity Option 3 200/20, can't wait as currently getting approximately 4Mbps down :)

YAY!!!

DLM has finally kicked in to raise my line speed back up to what it's supposed to be after dropping it down by 25%, caused by bad weather dropping my connection multiple times over a couple of days.

....it's only taken 11wks to spot the stable connection and raise it.

Nice one BT, very efficient DLM software you have there.

Im not the most observant of blokes but I am pretty sure this has appeared at the top of my road in the last few weeks:

Is it a fibre cabinet or just normal phone lines? Reason I ask is that we have always been told we are connected directly to the exchange (the exchange is literally behind that cabinet) and couldn't get fibre. OpenReach website says 'under review' for my postcode...

looks like a pcp cab has been installed for eo lines

my eo line was moved into a pcp cab and there now installing a fibre cabinet next to it

North Liverpool. Exchange is active and has been for some time but because we are connected direct to the Exchange (I can see it from my front drive!) we can only get ADSL2. We sync at circa 20Mb but I want more speed!

@Mp4 exchange-only line or connected to a cabinet?

exchange:

I hooked a laptop up direct to Ethernet and hub and hitting 56mbps

but via the 200mbps powerline's - 25mbps

So i shall look at ordering the gigabit ones & Wireless repeaters to get to the back of the house.

or just Ethernet the house :D ...but no idea where to get a while reel of cable from.
