BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

I've been on Infinity 2 since mid-August. It's been pretty much flawless since installation, running constantly at around 75/18. However over the past week I've noticed things slowing down. Did a speed test on Tuesday evening and the download was down to 8mb. Did another one half an hour later and it had gone up to 19mb. I've been monitoring it for the past few days hoping it would sort itself out but it's still fluctuating a lot. This morning it was just over 22mb. I've tried rebooting and trying various speed tests but still the same. As I type right now the download is showing as 9mb.

Strange thing is it's only the download that seems to be affected. The ping is either 17 or 18, the same as usual, and the upload speed is just over 17mb, again fine.

Forgive my cluelessness but I'm not exactly an expert on router stats, does anything look suspicious here?

I'll check again tonight just to be sure.

For a new customer to Fibre Broadband who would you guys recommend? I've got availability now at my current home, but I'm currently renovating another property that I'll be moving to early next year, will signing up to 18 month contract (which seems to be the only option) be ok if I'm moving house within that time frame?

I currently use Sky TV and BB but they want to charge me 20 for Fibre + line rental and a 50 for activation fee ! Which seems a bit steep.

See if you can have a barter with them, they offered me £5 a month + line rental as a retention deal, I doubt you would get that but maybe they can beat what you've been offered. I had Sky fibre for a couple of years and it was excellent, just changed to Plusnet though as sky don't have equipment in the cabinet next to my new flat.

Nope it's off again. Upload seems OK, ping seems OK, download is all over the place. I noticed it fluctuating a lot even during the test:

Seems to be at it's worst in the evening. Surely there can't be congestion already? Exchange only went live 3 months ago, and my cab just over a month later!

Thinking of moving from BT Infinity to a different provider, if I still have line rental with BT is this possible?

What other providers would people recommend?

I have FTTH here in Oz but the provider limited the connection to 25/5, happily they merged with another provider last month so a single phone call got me upgraded to 100/40!

danclivo, there seems to be some congestion on the network from my own speedtets done through the day the past 5 days and monitoring real-time speeds. Speeds flickered between 14Mbps to 22Mbps then full 38Mbps - depends a lot on the day too. I seem to be less affected than some here but such is the scope of the BT network there are too many factors to consider than being one issue - other than traffic management even though unlimited Infinity isn't managed.

Yeah, I posted it on the BT forum along with the BTW speed test result and router stats (I'm within 50 yards to both the ADSL and fibre cabinets and just under 1km from the exchange so my line stats are good). They pretty much nailed it to be congestion, considering the amount the speed drops and that it's at its worst at peak time. Last night the download dropped below 7mbps, lowest I've seen it yet.

Spent 2 and a half years on the old BT Unlimited ADSL2+ which was rock steady at 13down 1up for the entire duration, I assumed Infinity 2 would be just as reliable :(

Still can't get fibre in my area, which is a joke to be honest as they have a massive Exchange not 2 minutes down the road.

It's only going to cost about £10 a month to upgrade. I think that was with the 40/10 package.

Been waiting for months for fibre to become available to me. Postcode checker now showing 'Under Review' - what exactly does that mean?

A cabinet may be under review for a number of reasons, including local planning issues, (we still need planning permission in a number of scenarios, or planning due to safety reasons), problems with our underground network or issues with the supply of a suitable power source. Due to these reasons and the length of time it takes to resolve such problems, we are unable to give likely dates when the cabinet will be able to accept orders.

Does anyone know who I can contact at BT with regards to a fiber cabinet getting installed in my area? I've contacted the local coucil and they've already given BT permission to instal la cabinet. BT's site says between October 2014 and March 2015. Would like to know the specifics if at all possible.
