Bye Bye Game!

Game were profitable for several years, its only very recently they have made a loss. I would have thought that the time they were profitable they would have built up some reserves, but appears not.

Sorry for the staff but the upper management will get exactly what they deserved......NOTHING!!

GAME were the main reason PC @ retail is virtually extinct when they ditched it for selling overpriced pre-owned console games. Then you have the constant bullying tactics for THQ Steamworks games not being sold on Steam UK @ launch as GAME objected & various other underhand business methods which shaped the UK market & caused many friendly indie game shops to go bust.

The only downside is that now HMV are literally the ONLY high st retailer left who will still stock PC games which is pretty worrying for the many gamers who do not have decent broadband.

Its going to cause issues for console gamers as well & UK is just not ready to have a mainstream download only games market the infrastructure is still at least 5 years away from being reliable/fast enough.

At least GAME finally found a way to get shoppers through their doors on a weekend though!!!!

I disagree AWPC, "decent broadband" frankly doesn't matter, I can't remember the last time I used a high street retailer for PC gaming, I'd always order online from a retailer who doesn't have high street outlets as they're cheaper or get digital versions. That's since I had 128K ISDN, not "decent broadband". Most people are happy to download a game overnight these days if they have slow broadband connections, but for most it'll be a couple of hours at most which is hardly an inconvenience especially with pre-load etc which are now available on most digital distributors.

GAME shot itself in the foot by being overpriced for almost everything, always. I still remember trying to buy Wii accessories and they were wanting far more than even other high street retailers at the time. Don't get me wrong I loved browsing the shop, but I'd very, very rarely purchase anything.

The stores everywhere issues is an easy explanation.

When Game bought Gamestation they took on their stores as well. Now you would think they would just shut them down however it is just ntot that easy. Many will have long term leases of 10 to 15 years and they would have to pay full rates even if they shut the stores down.

So they keep them open trying to make some cash out of them. Add to that many are in shopping centres that have penalties to pull out as well makes it a real pain in the arse for the business.

The one and only time ever I've made a scene in a shop was in GAME. The idiotic girl with a pompous attitude and next to no knowledge rejected my refund request for an obviously faulty Wii peripheral. I wasn't rude, I wasn't threatening; I just stood my ground and continued to argue my case instead of calmly accepting her reasons for denying me my money back. She 'had me removed' by security. I was absolutely appalled (although I got a refund from another branch a few days later).

So I say good riddence!

I have to say, I've never understood the fear that some people have in downloading something that will take more than an hour or so.

I think the choice in pre owned titles has killed off major retailers like game, if I want a title now I simply mooch around car boots / cex / market stalls. I'm happy to wait for a title for a few weeks after launch for prices to drop. Shops such as cex can rely on ripping people off on other products such as phones, tablets etc. That's before considering things like the mm or ebay.

Gf bought mw3 for her son for the ps3 and paid something like £45, I told her to hold out but noooo. I waited another 9 weeks and got it for £29. Buyers on the whole have become much more savvy. I'm sorry for the staff, but had I worked at game or gs id have jumped ship months ago, we knew it was coming, they surely must have.

Is that the Game in Eldon Square? Altho I am trying to think where the other branch is near there.

In proper game style there are 3 in Eldon Square lol..

1 In Fenwicks
1 Beside Boots
1 down beside where beatties used to be

Not the most stream lined of overheads lol

There is 3, one is on the top floor of Fenwicks

At least we still have Grainger Games :D

Aye the joy that is grainger games... Inbred BO reeking bong eyed mongos lol

Aren't they the ones that are no longer getting invited to games events due to their last drink and drug fuelled abuse at the last big event?

Christ I didn't even know about the one in Fenwicks, (Although the in-store ones have been shut down)

Grainger games, They are who I actually use if I feel the need to impulse buy as they are normally the cheapest on the high street. It's a get in grab game and get out affair though lol

Can't say they will be missed, might pop in to a store this weekend to see if they've finally dropped pre-owned Crackdown and Condemned copies on 360 back down to £5 though...

The only sad thing here is the loss of jobs.

I've hated them ever since they took over a really good local gamestation, which had a great used Dreamcast games and other retro games section.

I feel for those who will lose their jobs, but I have to admit I won't be sad to see the back of the actual company.
