Canon 7D mk2 Thread

I'm curious why they'd add GPS to the 7DII. As the 7D is mainly used for sports & wildlife I'd have thought wifi would be in demand to transmit photos on the fly. Well, that or having neither GPS or Wifi. Seems like an odd feature to add as most people will strip geo data from their images anyway.

Stripping it before you export maybe but I guess it could still be useful for when you check back through the original RAW files etc.

Just wonder whether it'll be worth having on though or whether it'll just drain your batteries and give you inaccurate GPS data? :E

I wonder if Canon will implement the GPS better than on the 6D. It kills the battery, even when the camera is off the GPS remains on. You need to remember to manually deactivate the GPS each time.

Here are the EOS 7D Mark II official specifications:

Dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors

High speed continuous shooting up to 10 fps

65-point all cross-type AF system for high-performance, accurate subject tracking with EV -3 sensitivity (center point)

Dual Pixel CMOS AF

Up to 1090 JPEG, 31 RAW, and 19 RAW + JPEG shots in a single burst

Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system (iTR AF) that detects and tracks subjects, automatically switching the AF point to optimize tracking

Full HD video with Custom Movie Servo AF (speed and sensitivity) for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects, multiple frame rates including Full HD recording at 60p in MOV and MP4 formats and uncompressed HDMI out.

Intelligent Viewfinder II provides approximately 100% field of view

Built-in intervalometer and bulb timer

Magnesium alloy body with shutter durability up to 200,000 cycles and enhanced dust and weather resistance.

EOS Scene Detection System features a new 150,000-pixel/RGB+IR metering sensor

Built-in GPS Receiver provides a digital compass, records location information (longitude, latitude, elevation and universal coordinated time (UTC)) as EXIF information for geotagging images when shooting.

3.0-inch Clear View II LCD monitor (approximately 1,040,000 dots)

The 7D didn't handle well at anything above 800 but my 70D can handle 1600+ not so bad but it's slightly disappointing from that angle. Everything else seems fine though, apart from the price but that was always going to be high.

Sounds good to me !

So the one area that really needed an improvement, the sensor still seems to be the area they have made little gain? Pointless upgrade then. Canon crop sensors are so lacking. Not that I would ever buy another crop from canon but the gains in over 5 years are pretty poor.

I agree, the new 7D MKII looks like a small bump upgrade.
I'm a Canon owner and their Photokina announcements are very underwhelming.

In all honesty it shouldn't bother me, as I said I will never own another crop Canon. I have a 50D that I use less and less because the limitations frustrate me and right now I just don't have the extra cash to dump on a FF and 24-70 to replace my crop kit.

Yet canon are getting more and more of a beating to the point is it even worth them trying to make their own crop sensor anymore? Would anyone honestly recommend them over a nikon anymore? Anytime I am recommending to friends in the 400-1000 bracket the Canon's are never on the list.

As much as I disslike like the 7D series, I'm not sure Nikon have anything to match it...yet. None of the 7D's float my boat, in terms of sensors, just gimped, horrible DSLR's.

£1,599 for the 7DII. I'm very surprised (at being wrong, lol).

£7k for the 400 DO II, which I'm less surpised about. Better off with the 500F4 IMO.

Yes, in the case of Canon 70D and Nikon D7100 the Canon has better AF and a quicker buffer so it's more useful to someone like me who isn't necessarily after the very best image quality but instead getting the shot more consistently.

Most people couldn't tell the difference up to ISO 1600-3200 between Nikon/Canon crop cameras, it's all benchmark rubbish. I've never seen a picture from a D7100 on Flickr and thought wow, this is something my camera can't do.

Canon has a better range of telephoto lenses too, which is why you see mainly Canon for motorsport. Dunno about anything else.

I know there's some grain but at ISO 2000 it's more than usable, it's not like I have to pack all my Canon gear in for Nikon just for shots like this.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised with the price :)

As for the 400 DO mk2, it's not cheap but a quick glance over the canonrumors forums seemed to show a number of people that were very impressed with the MTF chart figures and the MTF chart figures where a converter was included... Now we just need to see what that translates to in real life.

It's not something I'll be buying any time soon but if they've improved DO lenses that much then I guess it's good for the future of Canon lenses.

I guess this new 7D is effectively a 1DX without the oversize body and full frame sensor.
Great if you want in focus, machine gun shutter release action :)

Yeah, despite the fact I wouldn't mind a FF sensored camera as well as a sports/wildlife camera, I can see myself getting this to replace my existing 70d. The AF and FPS were the reason I went from my 650d to the 70d and it looks like a good upgrade again for those reasons.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it's improved as far as high ISO shots go. I know it'll never be like a 6D or 5Dmk3 but it's supposed to be better with dual Digic 6 processors so I'm keen to see more info :)

I just watched this promo video and as usual, Youtube comments are amusing... Bunch of whiners complaining about no 4k video :/

TBH I think the Dual Digic 6 is just to get the higher burst rate, I wouldn't be expecting any miracles.

Those Youtube comments are hilarious. I hate spec whores.

Miracles no but any improvement is a bonus and from my rudimentary understanding of the whole sensor/processor relationship, I'm pretty sure people have said that more powerful processors help with noise reduction but I could be wrong?

Anyway, another video I've had popup on my FB feed from Park Cameras

It'll be slightly better than a 70D, which is no bad thing but again, upgrading just for that would leave you on a hiding to nothing.
