Car stolen and impounded, write off - pretty much

So you have no job but savings.....you decide to spend the money you have in the bank for living on on insurance for a 106......yeahhhhhh ok

I don't use drugs, hardly anymore and never have whist driving because that's completly stupid. I am only on prescribed Concerta for my add and buprenorphine for maintence (I am allowed to drive on this as I have declared to the DVLA). I have worked and had jobs but not right now. I've got tonnes of letters and phone calls tomorrow to make for finding work.

Anyway please stay on topic........

Bloody hell, if your FB page is anything to go by I'm glad you're not driving.
You seem to have an awful lot of disposable income for someone out of work. I'd stick to taxi's, you can clearly afford them.

Oh, and
Pug 106 rated 2nd best handling car even over Porches and Feraris
Really?

£400 aquarium, £1200 tv bed, £225 coat, £3400 insurance and £1300 car.

I am guessing someone come into some inheritance? Nothing wrong with that, but you should be more wise if you have no job and a complete bum.

bit insulting to call him a 'complete bum' because he lost his job. its not like people can just walk into jobs thesedays is it ?

Haha yeah awesome. Someday when I bang hot chicks they might end up knocked up and we'll be a family and my sons will have the sexy genes too. Or we'll end up on J. Kyle.

I bought my bed for £260 and it's lovely, not got an aqaurium though and I got my TV years a dam long time ago,

and that coat I never bought but it was nice. I genunely want to work or be self employed in the future and run a bussniess, I've applied for some computer repair stores by posting letters to addresses so wish me luck on that. I am open to any jobs though.

Yeah says Jermary Clarkson in a clip of Top Gear back in the days.

As for 106's I really like them, I can't insure a big car - my insurance is bad enough but small cars aye - 106 is awesome, you might not think so but that;s you, I love 'em.

Oh, and

Really?

Comes from that video Jeremy Clarkson made many moons ago I guess about finding the best handling car in the world. He had a bunch of cars at a track, with Tim Harvey and Richard Burns helping him thrash them around. They voted the 106 GTi as their second best car of the day behind the Ferrari 550 Maranello.

Oh I'm well aware of the video content, more a comment on "Porches and Feraris".

Basically I have a car which was stolen a week or so back, it was found smashed in alittle (but not burnt out). Now the police I contacted and they quickly recovered the car as thier were other complaints over dangerious driving - the car was towed to a garage, I gave the police my details and everything. I got a letter days later that the car was impounded however they want £150 then £20/day and maybe even more for a "specialist fee".

I am told to contact my insurance however I disscussed this with a few people and I am very unsure what to do. I never signed paper work or anything for some 3rd party garage to keep my car and bill me for it. I am told by someone that they had the same problem and contacted the police and the police said the gov pay for it and had it released free.

The car when i bought was worth on the insurance £1260, it's current value is probably £300 - if I can get the car back then sell for breaking. I don't and was told by people getting insurance involved is a bad idea as I'll get charged in the end a lot more next time.

Another option is to "leave" it as the insurance involvement and car value isn't worth it. However they said if I don't pay they dispose of at full cost to me, I know someone who drove UNINSURANCED for 6month and had thier car taken off them they just left the garage and it was distroyed and they never paid.

My insurance was £3400/year for £1260 pug 106 (I know it's a stupid price but that's that) - it's due up soon and they said to renew is only £2500 so it's a lot of money I am gonig to save. Could my insurance pay out the recovering of the car and I would sell for breaking rather than write off?

Anyone else had such a stupid situation?? CONFUSED.COM

I have previously worked for an independent vehicle recovery company. The company worked for the breakdown companies such as AA, Greenflag and others. Even other you may not of heard of, and in addition a major police force.

I can tell you that breakdown companies are situated all over UK and can be contracted to their respective police force. The police issue the instruction to seize the vehicle and for it to be towed back to the company's premises for secure storage until payment has been met.

They should have given you a form which states the prices on the back of it and other such details - though this form structure may vary from force to force, but the charges should not.

£150 at zero vat for seized vehicle such as a Section 165 or even something stolen such a vehicle - payment is depends on if it was off-road or not, weight of vehicle and couple of other things. It was £105 up until a few years back.

£20 p/day. I think you get the first 24 hours free.

There can be plus vat charges if it was at your request for the vehicle to be recovered, so if it wasn't you don't pay VAT :)

As for specialist charges the £150 should cover all of that if it's to do with yourself, but breakdown companies can try it on with insurance companies, but insurance companies are strict - they have a copy of the rules and regulations and it's quite black and white. The £150 fee is designed to stop the specialist charges happening as far as I am aware.

There were days when things such as gloves were also charges to customers - that does not happen anymore, or at least it should not.

However, it is possible to get the police force to pay the breakdown company a smaller fee instead of yourself, but not 100% sure of how that bit works. This is refered to as a 'Police Bill' or was by us :/ Think you may just have to argue your case, but this was a common occurrence for vehicles used in crime or stolen.

Just for everyone's information the breakdown companies have to file off monthly reports of financial and vehicle information. Everything has to be kept on record, signed and often audited, so they can't 'make-up' unofficial charges or they will get caught out.

Atomic, thankyou - this is pretty much what I want to know. I will go tomorrow to the garage and should I mention it was stolen and try and get it out for free? but the car may be "undrivable" so they drop it off at mine?

What about if I do nothng and let them crush it. They said "at full cost to you"

Any tips on what to say?

Why are they going to take your car away and then store it on their premises for free? Think about it, please. Use the tiny brain that you have. They need to cover their costs, and will recoup them from you.
