Chinese Grand Prix 2010, Shanghai - Race 4/19

On another forum i go on several pages of 'lol hamilton sucks with tyres!!' comments were quickly spawned when hamilton went off pace towards the end, absolutely nothing was said 2 laps later when buttons tyres fell apart allowing hamilton to more then make up the difference.

really dont no why there is so much hate for hamilton when he is clearly one of the best drivers in F1.

people moan when he doesnt race flat out then people moan when he does get stuck in.

what does he have to do?

Hamilton lost around 1 to 2 seconds per lap when his went off, Jenson lost 9 seconds in two laps!

Just spent some time reading the Autosport forum thread on this race....

Flibster, are you sure that wasn't stormfront.org :p

Sorry if this sounds like I'm playing the race card, but...... well I don't really have to complete that sentence do I? :D

Thank you Paddy Lowe for clearing up all the armchair expert FUD surrounding LH vs JB tyre wear... :)

Exactly - Lewis' tyres suffered considerably more because he was pushing harder to get overtakes, and driving in dirty air for large portions of the race.

He was pushed into Webber by Vettel wasn't he?

Possibly - Martin Brundle mentioned this I think.

Vettel had a mile of room and pushed Hamilton to the right, but Hamilton has his front tire between Vettel's, he couldn't back off, he had no where to go after Vettel squeezed him out, if Vettel stayed left both would have been safe.

Nail, hammer, head :)

Very disappointed with Alonso's pit lane entry move on Massa...

I thought that was an ingenious move... they're racing drivers - give them an inch, and they'll take a mile :)

(Haven't watched the Forum yet, so my comments may be out of date!)

If Ferrari want to win the title this year, I seriously think they need to start asking Massa to move aside (if he is holding Alonso up).

Agreed, he's head and shoulders above massa. I'd give him til mid season and then look at replacing him with kubica for next season. He's a mile off Alonsos race pace. Even with issues Alonso catches him up.

Good race, hamilton did extremely well helped by the SC I expected him to win with 10 laps to go.

The excuses for MS on the forum by norbert got cringeworthy :(

I think retiring in order to stop embarrising most of the other drivers on the track will be the only thing which will work.

I dont know if anyone has done a tally but it would be nice to see how many on track overtakes each driver has done.

I would love to see that statistic. I'm pretty sure Hamilton will top that chart, though there may be some surprises.

I would also like to see a statistic on how many times each driver has been overtaken (for a place, not lapped), on track. After today's race, I would imagine MS would be ranked pretty high.

If Hamilton gets a penalty and Vettel doesn't it will be on par with Lewis/Kimi at Spa08 for stupid decisions.

I hope neither get a penalty.

I wouldn't mind if one of both got warnings but I don't want to see any grid drops as at the end of the day no one was hurt and it didn't really effect the overall out come of the race

Just rewatched the BBC interview with Bernie - is it me, or is he going senile?

Also - McLaren have chartered a flight to Spain for the team and then coaches to get them back to the UK. Shame the cars are going to be stuck in China.

Going?

Also, they usually fly the cars out presumably? If so couldnt they do that to say eastern europe/west asia and then truck them the rest of the way? Would take a few days of travel mind.

Another great race IMO. I didn't think the second safety car outing was 100% necessary but it worked out OK in the end :)

Another great race today, very happy to see a McLaren 1-2 especially with Button #1

Whilst Hamilton came really close at the end despite the extra pit stops, when you consider that Button, Rosberg and Kubica really lost out with that last safety car it was right that Button got the win. Even though realistically I think over the season Hamilton will have the edge.

The race got me thinking though about how the potential Button/Rosberg partnership at Mercedes could have worked out - losing Button, especially with a car probably geared towards his driving style, seems to have really hurt Mercedes (other than in sponsorship), wheras for Button it's probably a positive.

And if the Renault continues to improve at this pace, I'd have to question why Kubica would want to go be Alonso's #2 at Ferrari when he could be #1 at Renault.

I don't get the Hamilton hate either, he takes a bashing from the other drivers too, fair enough to be critical about when he does do things wrong, but when other drivers do similar things people don't bash them in the same way. I'm at least glad that Pady Lowe defended his tyre management.

Hopefully no one should get a penalty for todays funny business as it made the race more entertaining, and I certainly don't think that anyone gained much unfairly. I don't see why they needed to investigate it after the race when there was plenty of time.

I was impressed with Petrov, its good to see a rookie doing well at Renault, and I found Alonsos antics particularly funny. Button has a skill for being at the right place that the right time, lucky or not he makes the strategy work well. Hamiltons overtakes were great as usual, quite funny though seeing how much hard work he has to put in with overtaking just to end up behind Button because of all the pit stops. Rosberg has just been great all season really, not because he is beating Schumacher, but just because he keeps putting in really good solid results and he finished ahead of a lot of faster cars today.

Pretty much the best race held in China so far, which I realise doesn't say much but still. Fantastic race for the McLarens, Godawful one for RBR, mixed fortunes for Mercedes (though their engine department must be earning their pay), not terribly brilliant one Ferrari.

Is it not about time that McLaren hand over all strategy calls to Jenson? Hamilton was brilliant once he was on the correct tyres (and for once everyone was cooking them rather than just him), but the fact remains that he only needed to make that many fantastic moves on other drivers because he was back in the pack due to a strategic ****-up and a poor qually position. Still a wonderful example of how to recover and get within sight of winning (and you can bet if it'd been anyone other than Jenson leading then Hamilton WOULD have won). RBR probably ought to take note of that recovery drive, given that they never recovered after the initial wrong call with the tyres. It wasn't wet enough obviously for Webber's setup to shine, but I honestly thought Vettel would do better than that.

Schumacher - less said the better I guess. Hope that Mercedes can sort him out a car with some traction at the rear for the rest of the season. Still say it's far too early to write him off though - two races saw him taken out of the running due to factors outside his control, he was only four seconds behind team-mate Rosberg in the season-opener at Bore-rain, and then today for whatever reason he just didn't seem to have the car underneath him (be it setup, his own confidence level, or something else). I just can't imagine this state of affairs lasting all season.

Official: Repremands for Vettel and Hamilton for the pit lane incident.

Pretty much about all they deserved for it.

Funny how when we didn't have a pitlane speed limit this sort of stuff rarely happened (and if it did then no-one got particularly uptight about it).
