Do you really need to root it?
Only the original was rootable and must not have been connected to the internet.

I would expect them all to have updated firmware now.
This is all very good... but I ordered my Chromecast last night... I could have done with £5 off that!
I will have to think of something else to buy now!
Okay, got my Chromecast today, great little thing.
Was thinking, HP Microserver + Plex + Nexus 5 could be a great way of watching my movies and what not on my TV while keeping my PC free for gaming and what not.
Would this work/be a good idea?
I know it's probably likely that the Micro Servers will end up cheap again at some point and wouldn't mind just sticking one under my desk so long as it's fairly quiet.

Yes this is exactly what I use mine for (including an HP Microserver I got last month for £97 after the cashback). It works flawlessly.

The offer has been extended (not quite as cheap as they were) from servers+ (not sure if that breaks rules, sorry OPs if so but OC didn't t do these anymore last I checked).

Ack, that's well annoying. £25 would have been worth it just so I don't have to turn my HTPC on just for music.

Not a stupid question at all! It doesn't at the moment but it could theoretically do in the same way that Google Music does. Spotify haven't implemented support that's all.
I use other music apps as well as Google Music (like BeyondPod) which work with it.

Was having a play with this thing last night, it's got some beautiful full HD wallpapers but can you actually install any apps to the Chromecast itself or it works entirely off the phone/tablet/PC controlling it?

Set up plex on a computer, had it index some video folders.
Get the Plex app for my Z1 and I can just pick and choose what I want to watch. Doesn't matter what it is, it just plays!
That's the main reason I bought it.
YouTube, Google Music, Netflix are nice extras but I could do YouTube and Netflix on my Xbox One anyway...!
It supporting HDMI CEC is nice, as it'll switch my amp input to it when I initiate a cast!
