Chromecast now available in the UK!

Got mine earlier and it's working sweet with Plex

iPlayer also fantastic! Love this little dongle, vast potential :D

Also kinda glad it's come to the UK just as things are starting to come together for it...

Got mine today and works brilliantly!

Except I have an underscan problem with my TV... And my TV doesn't have an option to fix this...

Mine arrived 2 days after ordering. Setup and streaming both Netflix and 1080p mkv files like a champ :D

Even the wife was impressed. She uniformly rolls her eyes every time I spend money on anything remotely 'techy' so this is a glowing endorsement indeed

Not sure if this is actually something for me

Our Internet cannot stream hd video
I have a microserver
I have a htpc
I have a av receiver

Far as I am a aware this only really is useful if you don't have a htpc and have decent Internet?

It is of less use for you as you have a HTPC with enough grunt to play your stuff from your microserver without transcoding.

The Chromecast requires Plex to transcode MKV, presumably to reduce bitrate so it'll play smooth over WiFi, and because it doesn't have the hardware support for most popular backstreet encodes.

If I (still) had a HTPC (power surge killed it) I'd probably just use my Chromecast for casting YouTube videos...but then my Xbox One can do that too...

Been looking at this and have have a bit of a question - atm I've a freenas media server connected into my bthub 5 (shut up :P ) and was wondering if I got a chromecast would I beable to use it with my media server - so can I get a plugin or something that will allow freenas to transcode the video and then stream it to chromecast or would this be a no-go?

ah in that case it is probably not worth it. i did wonder how it managed to stream mkvs. the transcoding explains it.
im guessing you lose hd audio etc?

very much looks like something for those without a htpc

I was set on the chromecast but a friend just recommended roku. I hadn't heard of it so just googled it; it appears to do most things the chromecast does plus gives access to '900 channels'.

Is the main difference between the two that chromecast allows you to use your phone as remote whereas roku has its own OS and remote?

Yes you can use your phone or android tablet as a remote.
Chromecast is still fairly new especially in the UK so give it time for developers to develop for it and allow casting from their apps. It has great potential and can only get better. I think Chromecast will be better in the long run....

Picked one of these up over the weekend and have been testing it out.

Very impressed with it so far, easy to install and runs off the USB on the TV without an issue.

Currently tried Youtube in 1080p with no hiccups. Netflix also streams well over 1080p as I watched some episodes of Dexter last night.

Hoping 4od and ITV player will bring some support soon...

Doesn't allow me to stream music I've uploaded to Google music?
Any fixes? Will it be allowed if I upload it from my tablet then cast it?

Edit: This does work as I had hoped, I was just signed into the wrong account on my tablet (Woops!)

What is it saying/doing when you try, I've been 'casting' music a lot and it's just worked, both music I uploaded and stuff through the all access bit...
