Chromecast

Now that the Chromecast has been officially released in the U.K. might now be a good time to close this particular thread and to keep all Chromecast related discussion here?

Correct, would have thought this forum would be better than Mobile/Tablets being that it is a TV device and not a phone or tablet but nevermind. Mods can decide :)

ordered, will be nice to have youtube/iplayer in the lounge...

Only thing missing is amazon instant video...

Funny you mention that! Amazon are not going to provide their services for Chromecast. Given that they are in competition with Google/Apple, etc. So they will be looking at providing something of their own in this area.

So if you have Prime, with video streaming. Forget getting it to work with Chromecast. Amazon say nay! Unless some dev somewhere comes up with an app that can eventually do this.

Have to say, it's a good piece of kit! I tested it last night on 2 TVs and my monitor. One of the TVs is a Samsung and it's about 40"+ wide. It's DVB so it has free to air channels. It's really hit and miss though and my tablet/phone was having difficulty connecting to the cast.

When I tested it on a smaller TV, it had no issues. Worked flawlessly! Same with my monitor. I'm wondering why it's hit and miss on the bigger TV. I thought maybe the wifi channel needed to be set to a manual channel. It worked. But then tried it later on. Nothing! We did have heavy winds last night so not sure if that had an effect. But I will try again tonight and see what happens.

That's weird because someone on that other thread said to keep it all here since they don't see it as a phone/tablet. :p

I currently use a MHL lead to stream movies to my TV directly, but that's just died on me for some reason.

Audio via HDMI can be up to 5.1, what's the chromecast like and i'm worried about the wifi, will it stream well?

Well, my non-freeview TV that doesn't have a DVD or similar player attached is good for absolutely nothing. After plugging in my Chromecast I can now get Netflix, Youtube, iPlayer etc on it all for the price of £30.

Chromecast is a standalone device, it's not an wireless extender. It connects to the internet wirelessly like any other wireless device. You open Netflix or Youtube on your phone/tablet, connect it to the Chromecast. Open the video you want to watch then turn your phone/tablet off. The Chromecast maintains the stream to the outside servers not your phone/tablet.

Search for it on YouTube to see examples.

So it's like the mirror feature on ATV?
