Cities Skylines 2 is Official!

Watched about half of Mondays 2hr stream. I cant do more than 30min chunks because the hosts are just so damn annoying.

During the stream, the one who seems to just interact with the chat, a community manager on their 3rd stream asks "Whats the blue bar mean?" and then later asked the same about the yellow bar.
How do you hire someone to interact with the community, and deal with their issues and/or questions, who after this long doesnt know what the RCI bars represent?? Its a standard feature in pretty much every city builder, and its been just like this in the SimCity for many decades.
If she's not the Paradox CEOs niece or something, whoever does the hiring over there should fire her, then themselves.
This is a 100% truthful statement, on all points

I didn’t see the stream so I don’t know how the interaction went but my first assumption is that she is asking question as a beginner since there is a high likely hood of beginners watching the stream or the VOD

Yeah, i guess thats a possibility, though it would be easier to just answer it rather than ask the other person to explain it for them.

Just realised that Workshop support isn’t mentioned on the Steam page. We know there’s mod support but it’s listed as ‘Paradox Mods’ in the game. Presumably this lets console players have mods, which is a good thing, but it’s making me question why buy a Steam key.

It’s free on GamePass and the best reason for buying it has been dropped with this move. Might as well play it on GP until they add DLC and then buy the game on Steam on discount and get the DLC. I’ve no interest buying DLC for a title im basically borrowing.

One of the reasons I was okay with buying it anyway was the issues I’ve had with the Xbox app not authenticating games and being unable to play them (any/all GP titles) but I’ve done a fresh Win10 install so should get 6mo before something breaks it again.

They're doing a video soon on mod support, so will be interesting to see if they reveal at that point that it will have workshop support or not. Having said that, my preorder steam cdkey for it cost £25, so its cheap anyway :)

Really? I thought they were done with them as its been a month since the last one and they've been doing the livestreams instead.

I bought the premium version last week, figured i might as well, but shortly after it occurred to me that the price difference between basic and premium on CDKeys is basically the same as it is on Steam (£29 diff on CDK, £33 on Steam), all the saving is coming from the base game, and chances are if i buy the DLC from CDK when it releases, it'll have a saving there too, plus im not that fussed about the radio stations so they can be skipped.

oh, and theres news posted on the CS2 steam page about Mods & Performance :D

"First and foremost, our in-game editor is currently in its beta phase and will launch shortly after release"
Not a great start...

While the modding tool will have a basic framework at its inception, we are dedicated to its continuous expansion and enhancement, making it a central focus of our development efforts moving forward. More in-depth details about the editor and its roadmap ahead will be shared shortly - keep an eye out for our dev diaries.

Secondly, we're introducing Paradox Mods as the new mods platform for Cities: Skylines II. One of the core reasons for this is its inclusivity; modding capabilities will be extended to players across platforms - both PC and console - aligning with our commitment to provide as many as possible with the opportunity to modify and enjoy the game.

Not overly impressed tbh. It makes sense for console platforms though, but the fact that it isnt ready for launch, and they've left it till a week before launch to bring all of this up, is a little disappointing. We dont even know what will be possible with these tools. Maybe they're much better, who knows.

edit - their FAQ on the Paradox forums point out that consoles will only get asset mods, nothing that touches the code. Thats pretty significant, considering a lot of the best mods are fixing shortcomings in the base game.

Yeah they mentioned in one of the livestreams that mod info would be the subject of a video coming up soon.

Not great news for console users, but then console players are second class citizens anyway, as long as the PC Master Race is ok I cant say it bothers me what consoles do or dont get :D

Yeah, my main concern will be what Paradox do and dont allow to be added. Are they going to be sensitive to assets like McDonalds drive-thrus etc.
The FAQ says other platforms arent supported, but whether that means cannot be utilised is another matter. I think workarounds will be possible for sites like Nexus Mods. It'll depend on whether the mod list is a basic text document or whether its encrypted or something needless to lock it all down.

Im also wondering how great an idea was it to add mods for consoles. They've already had to delay the release for consoles due to performance issues, so adding mods is only going to make matters worse. Then consider that while they're waiting, there's likely going to be around 6mo worth of assets building up, then the floodgates will open and many will go nuts etc. Seems like a good idea that might be a bad idea with hindsight.

Its a good point, I can't see Paradox allowing anything that could be "claimed" by the owners, things like as you say McDonalds

From the same FAQ/announcement:

Cities: Skylines II is a next-gen title, and naturally, it demands certain hardware requirements. With that said, while our team has worked tirelessly to deliver the best experience possible, we have not achieved the benchmark we targeted.

In light of this, we still think for the long-term of the project, releasing now is the best way forward. We are proud of the unique gameplay and features in Cities: Skylines II, and we genuinely believe that it offers a great experience that you will enjoy.

We will continually improve the game over the coming months, but we also want to manage expectations on performance for the coming release. Our ambition is for Cities: Skylines II to be enjoyed by as many players as possible, and we're committed to ensuring it reaches its full potential.

Will be interesting to see how this performs without utter top end hardware.....

It didnt perform great in the livestreams, until they changed to 64gb of memory, then it was much better, does seem that its CPU/Mem intensive rather than GPU. I've watched about 20 hours now of pre-release footage, including the quite excellent city designer Infrastructurist, who always makes brilliant looking cities, and I'm happy with my preorder. Its not going to be better than a heavily modded CS1 at release but its most definitely far superior to vanilla CS1, so once the mods and assets get going too its going to surpass CS1. Way I see CS2 is that its all about the bar and the bar of what CS2 can achieve is much higher than CS1 will ever be able to reach. In the meantime, I can practice my city building techniques :D

Release will be interesting, more interesting aside from that is the new paradox mods because If there isn't going to be a workshop on Steam I won't need to buy the game I'll just use XBGP!

I’m not concerned by the mod system not being available on release, I’d like to actually play the vanilla game for a bit.

I’m going to take a punt and predict the new mod system allows mod makers to monetise their work. That also means Paradox will be able to take a cut. That seems like a really obvious reason for doing all that work. The bonus is mods outside of steam.
