Cities Skylines 2 is Official!

I was a little hesitant when, VERY late to the party, it was announced that official mod support would come to Tropico 6. They did not use Steam but instead used Mod.io....

......as the game sold using various platforms it made sense, although, being biased, I preferred Steam. With cross platform mod support, the UI within the game allows access, it does seem to work ok.

I do hope that Paradox is not intending to monetise this, nor impose any more restrictions or control for what might be released over that of what Steam has done for Cities Skylines. I do love using the Steam Workshop, along with the forums and feedback options.
But I do get why Steam might not be the best platform to use the CS 2 considering where it will be sold and the devices using it.
However I do have some, perhaps unfounded, concerns regarding Paradox hosting them for CS2........Time will tell how that will work out.

I’m not concerned by the mod system not being available on release, I’d like to actually play the vanilla game for a bit.

I’m going to take a punt and predict the new mod system allows mod makers to monetise their work. That also means Paradox will be able to take a cut. That seems like a really obvious reason for doing all that work. The bonus is mods outside of steam.
As long as I can get MoveIt and TMPE I will be happy

64GB of ram to play a game is ridiculous - What do they want to do, run the whole game from memory?

Is the install size even that big?
I'm assuming that its something to do with the tracking of every citizen and their lives or something. Thats a new feature in CS2 , mind you its also the unity engine, which doesnt run the best as it is, it often doesnt make the best use of multicore

In the various streams that I've watched I have seen various configs, 16gb, 32gb, AMD, Intel, everything from a 2080TI to a 4070 and they've all got laggy once the city is medium sized. FPS'es of 20 to 30. The one thing that I've seen make the biggest difference is going from 32gb to 64gb.

Did you notice anything in relation to Intel Vs AMD in terms of which seems to be preferred, kinda difficult to answer perhaps. I'm trying to figure if this game, doubtful, might take advantage of AMD's 3D cache or prefer a multi core CPU with high IPS, that could work out in favour of Intel.

Thanks.

No idea if one is preferred over the other but I will say that I've seen the same performance issues in both specs , one hasnt seemed significantly better than the other in play at least

It will be interesting to see what "no hardware limits" compared to the previous hardcoded limits will actually mean in this iteration of the game in terms of larger city sizes. Perhaps performance and optimisation patches over time might improve that.
It could be the swapping of a hardcoded limitation to that of an engine limitation, as a generalisation.

Release will be interesting, more interesting aside from that is the new paradox mods because If there isn't going to be a workshop on Steam I won't need to buy the game I'll just use XBGP!
Yeah, I put in a request for a refund for my copy last night. I'll play it on Game Pass and then when they add the Bridges & Ports DLC i'll buy the game & DLC it on Steam. Until then, no point paying £55-56 for something on 2 PC platforms when both should be equal.

oh man...hopefully it'll get more optimised after release
cannot justify 64gb just for one game lol
I saw a thread on this subject on reddit last week, and asked the question: What games have released in whatever initial state (EA, Beta, 1.0 etc) and then have seen performance gains through optimisation? Every single game i can think of which performed poorly to begin with, and eventually became quite playable, did so because of hardware gains, not software. The only caveat i think would be driver improvement - which again, are still hardware related, rather than thanks to the developer.

'Not yet optimised' is this mythic excuse developers come up with to excuse poor performance and to convince people to buy it in this state, on the basis that it'll be all good once they pass it through the magic optimatron and double your FPS. Games get optimised bit by bit, as they're finalised, thats how CO knew they needed to modify the hardware requirements a few weeks before launch, all the major gains have been exhausted and this is the game 95% optimised.

64gb is coming though, this might be the first game you'd play, but it'll happening at some point. Once we start adding mods, you'll definitely be wanting more though.

I just pre-ordered the base game for £27.99 on CDKeys, then checked my account and noticed I had already pre-ordered the ultimate edition back in July for £45
I've submitted a ticket to refund my £27.99

yeah i've no doubts 64gb is the future, just finding the costs difficult to justify currently

I got 32gb for the original game, it’s still the only game that I’ve put any significant amount of time into that’s needed it.

I listened to Biffa’s final thoughts video. My biggest take away is that it’s a different game to CS1 and it’s game mechanics are different so done go in expecting to play the same as you did with CS1.

Any experience with CDKeys preorders? When is the key likely to be released?

Just seen a topic on reddit highlighting a couple of comments from CO on the subject of mods.

First one was clarifying that PDXMods will never be paywalling content - So I believe that'll be the case for CS2, everything is subject to change, but it seems highly unlikely it'd change that stance in the next few years.
The other was stating that any mod can be published, however if they get a cease & desist request it'll be removed, which is fine.

So basically the same circumstances as with Steam Workshop.
